This is the guy, everybody knows. Or should know. If they think they don't, seeing few photos will make them realize they have seen his work somewhere. Including the album covers of various bands.

What could be said about Witkin anymore, what haven't been said? Perhaps nothing, but have to open the topic just for sake if there is someone who haven't yet exposed himself for great art.

I was just re-reading SWITCH magazine from Japan. Bought it from Timeless distribution while ago, and this issue is Witkin special. It has plenty of photos, with good liner notes. While his work is indeed on edge of offensive, it shows that there is always idea, always meaning. It's not just bodyparts, corpses, retards, s/m, freaks, etc. to shock you. This magazine is good, when some of the well known photos are exposed. Stories told what is behind the photos. Masked man in CBT scene, with rope tied around his balls, rope going through loop in ceiling and heavy weights that stretch the testicles are place just above the face. Weights attached, will torture and stretch the balls, yet if they'd slip, weights would fall on his face and possibly kill him. This was the fantasy of some homosexual, captured on perfect image. There are mental patients dressed as strange costumes. There is one infamous photos of fat man corpse, sitting on chair, without head. Head/brain donated to medical science, while body, was donated to Witkin for 1 day to be used, before buried to unmarked grave. Headless corpse sitting in chair, in shitty room, symbolizing utmost solitude.  Perhaps even as deadman, there was nothing to be known of the subject. Than his anonymous corpse to be used for art & science until discarded without even tombstone remembering who he was. List would be endless. Every image carries story. Every image seems like long process of search/friendship/ideas/preparations and most of all the visual elements are always phenomenal. Hand made. Film. Manual adjusting. Scratching negatives with razors and so on. No computer edits. When you see this mans visions, you start to understand where A LOT of current subcultural and even mainstream things have gotten some influences?

for more samples, just google images of Witkin and you get endless amount of them.

Book recommendations could be for example:
cheap -> Thames & Hudson Photofile series. c. 60 works, price around 10,-
pricey -> THE BONE HOUSE -hardcover in slipcase. According to Amazon sales, current prices for 1st edition seems to start from 80$ used, 250$ new. 2nd edition for 40$ upwards. 2nd edition probably still available in selected specialist shops around the world, but it's already 10 years old too.

There is an exhibition of Witkin photos at Fotografiska Muséet in Stockholm. I think it runs until August or September. The exhibition is fairly "safe" and contains nothing too offensive, but there are some still lifes and other photos including body parts and corpses and plenty of "unusual" models. Worth visiting if you have a chance. Seeing his work in original size is quite a different experience than seeing pictures in books.

His stuff until mid/late 90's was absolutely brilliant. Now he is self repeating himself.
Last exhibitions were boring.

Do not miss the Witkin arte documentary showing deliveries of packages with aborted fetuses/stillborn children and him working in a mental institution with nutcases in reinassanche clothes.
He's been one of the bestl, but really no innovation in the last years.

Joel-Peter Witkin - L'image indélébile  - document can be seen on youtube. 6 parts. Use search and it's there. Seeing also methods of how photos are actually being made, how things aren't so much manipulation, but props.

I've seen a documentary on Witkin & how he sets thingsup. Can't remember much from it & I've sold all the books I had. I think I remember St.Degeneratus of Ultra tried to get permission to use a photo for an LP cover but Witkin said no.

were the pungent stench covers authorised?

Interesting story involving Witkin: While I was going to school for art several years ago I was pretty close to a few of my instructors, one of them being the Art History professor. She had a friend/former student/whatever that worked as an assistant to Witkin. There was some kind of job opening at my school and the Witkin assistant applied. The art history professor told me that if her friend got the job at the school, then Witkin would probably want to hire a replacement assistant and that she would try to get me the job after I graduated.

It never happened, the person didn't get the job at my school. For a while I was really excited about the possibility of traveling with him to Russia or China and buying bulk prison cadavers or however he gets his subjects. Then he would have me dismember them and arrange the parts for him to photograph. I imagine it would be very very strange to be his assistant, haha.

I think there is another exhibition of him in MIlan at the moment.

I remember St. Degeneratus of Ultra telling me he tried to get permission to use a Witkin photo for LP art but was refused.

Just got a copy of THE BONE HOUSE (2nd ed.). Paid around €50 for it, still shrink wrapped. A very good selection of photos. Most are from the 80s and frist half of the 90s. Classy, linnen bound hard cover in a sturdy slip case. Very nice and highly recommended! Sound be fairly easy to get, still.

Latest I bought was Vanitas.

It was partly related to Prague exhibition. Nice book with lots of sketches and information too. Found it in some bookstore in Prague last year.

I was just checking out his new book from 2012. Self titled, published by Delpire. Would be great, unless it would once again include many of the same photos we've seen over and over and over again.
Book is huge. Hardcover, about 10" or was it even 12" size pages. Thick as fuck. Saw it couple days ago in Helmut Newton museum in Berlin for 72 euros, and now when I see lowest Amazon sellers all ask 170USD, it seems like maybe it could have been worth to buy anyways..  But there was other books I preferred to buy. Comments of those later when I have time.

30 minutes free version of document what is yet to be released in full length. Worth to check out! Not sure what is status now, this has been up since early this year:

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR: As a huge lover and supporter of the ARTS, I realize art can sometimes be a little bit of a strain on the wallet/purse, and not everyone can afford to participate on a financial level. So in an effort to give back a little, I have decided to release the first 30 minutes of the "Joel-Peter Witkin: An Objective Eye" documentary, completely free. That's right, no strings attached... I'm not even running ads on this video.

But if you like what you see, and would like to watch the rest, you can go to www.witkinmovie.com and there you'll have the option to stream it or download it for a reasonable price. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy this preview.

If you manage to see this somewhere for less than 70€, I recommend to buy it immediately! I was lucky enough to get this one for 47€ from Amazon.de 2 weeks ago! Today it's more than 120 € from a seller in the US!
