I was sure I have been talking about this composer in topic of "classical" or "modern music" or something, but search didn't give any results.
Was listening Aerial CD yesterday, and I must say it must be THE best orchestral art music I have hear for ages. Was recommended by friend who heard it in Finnish radio when it came out (2015) and I grabbed my copy pretty much instantly after it. Out of many CD's, this is still something what after few years seems best thing done since the works by veterans...

Aerial CD was published by huge company, Deutsche Grammophon, owned these days by Universal. So it should be available pretty well on CD format. What is mindblowing, when talking about person who is currently Composer-in-Residence with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and praised by New York Times level papers, getting awards etc.. and then... where you get the stuff? Fucking iTunes and youtube mostly... Probably have to check the dealers today, if situation has changed. Couple years ago, nothing beyond Aerial was ever available.

Opening piece of CD, composition for 4 percussions and 7 brass. If you got proper speakers with heavy duty BASS frequency possibilities, this is the stuff where it is serious advantage:

This track is almost like ritual music found from Aural Hypnox catalogue or such. It's almost too bad that the aesthetic of the players is the usual suit & tie orchestra. Stuff like this makes me wonder should I once in a while stock some contemporary music titles along all the sleazy noise stuff, hah..

Check the live material from the CD compositions. Massive, dark and slow symphonic sound. All about texture and drifting colossal elements of sound:

She has also bandcamp where earlier work can be heard:

Solo piano tracks on the Rhizoma CD are brilliant. Occasionally nearly dark ambient sounding gloomy percussive sounds.
For example: Hidden - Inwards track.

The amount of sheer garbage I have waded through over the years in field of "new music", is probably worth due handful of composers and releases that live up to the actually creating this good material. If you're not ready to spend time with going through material, but go straight to the best, I'd say Aerial CD is something one needs to have in collection among the best known avant-garde composers.

Aequa CD should be available now. Didn't notice it came out half year ago, so probably still in print. Based on short sample listening, seems a notch more "normal", orchestral sound.

Very nice. Sounds like something Cold Spring would release.

No idea what success they had with for example Krzysztof Penderecki CD. Brilliant CD.

It seems that many, even the biggest names on art music suffer from not being released properly. Even infamous names are being (re)pressed as CDR and prices of most CD releases seems pretty high. In Finland if you go for anything else but Naxos stuff, it will be 20 euro price tag on CD still today.

Cold Spring as a label, they are familiar with working with "real artists" so to say. Deal with copyright organizations, signing contracts and paying mechanical rights. In such situation, it could be probably even good financially to start putting out some of the best modern music labels. I did occasionally toy with idea of asking some "real artists" to make CD's on yet another sub-label. I don't deal with "paperwork" nor "organizations". Unlikely there are composers on this level who'd accept "underground deals".

Anna Thorvaldsdottir is a total genius and if there were a way to funnel the very few "high" "art" music composers worth listening to down into "our" part of music I think that would be fantastic, but is probably unlikely. maybe if presented as some kind of boutique "art edition" type of thing? even then probably many contracts involved

Aerial is a great release. I would love to hear more from her

Thinking about buying a ticket to see the Orchestra  (Ice) play
Georges Bizet L'Arlésienne, suite
Maurice Ravel Piano Concerto for the Left Hand
Anna Thorvaldsdottir Aeriality
Jean Sibelius Symphony no. 1

Would like to see Anna and co play more of her material but seeing them play Aeriality is interesting enough

I go to many of these modern classical concerts, and they are always great. There are not a lot of people at them, though, compared to the ones where they play Romantic music (or Impressionistic music, Stravinsky, or Arvo Pärt). I don't know how it is in other places with state funding or private support for this kind of music, but here much of it is free to go to. It's a shame that not many people use the opportunities to hear it, but I guess that historically many of the greatest composers ever first got appreciated after many years.

I also got to see her music performed for maybe 50 people 1½ year ago. I believe it was her behind the piano and visuals.

Finally managed to get Anna Thorvaldsdottir "Rhizome" CD. New re-mastered edition came out on Sono Luminus. It is the debut album, but could be her best after all. Or right there with Aerial.  Certainly better than Aequa.

I noticed Archora; Aiôn came out just now. Release date may 26th. One could grab it from Amazon, but from the usual place in Europe where I bought SL label stuff, doesn't have it even listed yet. Hopefully soon. Album can be listened also at:

Probably would have to start wading thought labels catalogue to find out if there is other good stuff there.

Label is quite curious. Their studio, location and technology quite interesting. Record label and acoustic music recording studio located 70 miles west of Washington, DC. Specializing in ultra-high fidelity stereo and surround recordings.Pics & info here: https://www.sonoluminus.com

Just listened to Aerials and holy crap this is good.

Fistfuck Masonanie

Enjoying Aerial very much. Great suspense, tension, and atmosphere. The percussion work really accentuates the horns and strings. Looking forward to listening to the other albums.

Spektral Quartet Performs Anna Thorvaldsdottir – Enigma CD
Very good CD from 2021! Just got it and I also like that duration of disc is 28:28 min. Less than half an hour goes fast, but leaves you want to replay in instantly.
https://sonoluminuslabel.bandcamp.com/album/enigma

QuoteSpektral Quartet  Founded in 2010, the Spektral Quartet is widely regarded as one of Chicago's most magnetic and forward-thinking chamber ensembles. The group's inclusive approach to concert format, transforming the audience experience from a transactional one to a far more intimate phenomenon, has earned it a loyal following within and far beyond the city limits.
(....)
Spektral Quartet serves as ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago and was invited in 2013 to join the Rush Hour Series's Back-of-the-Yards project, which will offer year-long music education and outreach in one of Chicago's most under-served neighborhoods.

All the other Spektral Quartet I heard, borders absolute unbearable, but this one CD is absolutely great. Perhaps notably odd is Spektral Quartets "Serious Business" album, which is odd creation of "different perspectives on humor through the lens of classical music – a flavor of music that could use a little more funny, in general."  I am quite sure that for some this album could be just enough demented that it crosses over to weirdo humoristic noise... although there is no really noise in it.

Pieces with vocals are too much for me, hah, but some of the instrumental tracks are good. Also oddity that there are a lot of tracks that are merely less than 10 seconds long, lots of 2 minute pieces etc  I can't think of other chamber ensembles doing songs in length of grindcore tracks.. Filling CD album with 32 songs.
