No one mentioned anything by Sigilum S?

Fuck yeah. Takes me back.

Also....
this one may seem a bit obvious, and it more of a "BM-esque" vibe than those posted above, also with drone-y, industrial, ritual and dark dungeon / mental asylum vibe....

Been listening to The Curfew Recordings which has a very occult feeling to it. Beautiful natural acoustics and haunting flute sound (actually coming from a bone, I believe). Its a really nice change from the digital keyboard music, where plugins and effects pedals are replaced with natural sounds and scrapping percussion.

Very good recommendation, thanks. Fans of this style would be advised to look into Metgumbnerbone's Liegeliahorn, which was possibly recorded in and around the same place at the same time, and also the Newcastle UK, 27-3-1984 bootleg, re- "This is a bootleg including material recorded at a disused industrial site in Newcastle. These recordings (in different form, along with other material recorded at the same location) appear on 'The Curfew Recordings' CD (Harbinger Sound)".

Perhaps of secondary interest, Asmus Tietchens' Seuchengebiete, which was apparently produced in response to Liegeliahorn, of which Tietchens was extremely critical- apparently, he thought (soon-to-be A-Mission Records label-mates) Metgumbnerbone were a pack of pretentious twats. (He reserved the descriptor "childish theater", which is kind of how I initially felt about this thread; though I must say we have, in the best traditions of SI, redeemed ourselves!) Since then, Tietchens has gone on to release Seuchengebiete 2 and 3, and other work in the vein, all in a numbered series entitled "Hydrophonie", also appears on Formen Letzter Hausmusik and the split-collab with Vidna Obmana. All essential- though it does not pain me to say I'd probably still take any of the better Metgumber over it...

Edit
Someone put together a nice "montage" of most all existent Hydrophonie recordings:

Anything involving the occult will always come off a little childish or cheesy, including music, but I think there is definitely room for occult ambient, because to me, it seems like a natural blending of theme and sound. At its best, Occult ambient or whatever you want to call it has a natural, hypnotic sound, and at its worst, its just bad keyboard synths with artificial reverb.

Deverills Nexion is another unit I have recently been listening some. I was never too fond of his previous works, but this one has achieved something quite different. It's never noise, not too obvious black metal side-project flaws. LP on AJNA is more of eccentric music than "industrial" or "ambient". Some of the keyboard works of the band is almost like Les Joyax De La Princesse transforming into sinister magick, instead of historical documents.

The Sinister Tarot was if not my favorite album released last year at least definitely one of the most often played for me. Not intending to do the usual 'internet gossiping' thing but I can't help but get the impression that this is maybe the individual behind Emit/Hammemit as there is distinct similarities between the projects that I won't get into...the ONA connection obviously being one of them though. But more importantly, musically, the thread is there with the utterly haunting, dreamy otherworldliness that surrounds the album along with the other Deverill's Nexion recordings really reminds me of Hammemit, especially reminiscent of Morthwork which is one of my favorite recordings of all time. Just perfect music for being alone in the middle of the night walking through the woods or empty neighborhoods, some of the most meditative music for me personally that I've ever heard.

In relation to the Dungeon Synth part of the thread, I discovered Mortiis as a teenager when he was in the heart of his ambient sound and Crypt of the Wizard and Song of a Long Forgotten Ghost still get regular plays on the turn table. Something about this music..like Wongraven and Trollman av Ildtoppberg which I also absolutely love.

really have to be in the mood for this stuff, but some that haven't been mentioned...

AGHAST - Hexerei Im Zwielicht Der Finsternis - in my mind this is a classic album, really surprised it hasn't been mentioned as this is exactly what Occult/Ritual/Satanic/pagan/BM-esque/dark dungeon music is! icey cold minimal ambient from Sweden, recorded mid-90's in Darkthrone's studio by two females, supposed witches. haunting, chilling, frightening satanic atmosphere. has been re-issued several times since the original cd on CMI went out of print. https://www.discogs.com/artist/42620-Aghast

T.G.V.T - Rinde Humano -
i actually found this in a used bin at a record store for $5. intrigued by the track on the "ant-hology" compilation on Ant-Zen i decided this was a good pick. unique sound. weird. https://www.discogs.com/Third-Global-Vagina-Torture-TGVT-Rinde-Humano/release/253421

Cintecele Diavolui - The Devi's Songs - this one is definitely corny, but classic. i don't know why i like this but is essential album for this topic for sure! i love how you can tell it was recorded live from the little fuck ups on the keyboard... https://www.discogs.com/Cintecele-Diavolui-The-Devils-Songs/release/244138
i know Mortiis is cheesy as fuck but when i'm in the mood for it anything he did from '93-'99 is perfect.

Devils G and Fiends ‎– Even Devils Have A Past - got this tape in a trade, was interested as it is a compilation of projects from Devis Granziera of Teatro Satanico. the vibe is occult/ritual but a lot of the music in the beginning of the tape just doesn't seem to match for me, and pretty much ruins the good parts since i am not one to fast-forward through tapes... B-side should've been the A-side in my opinion. weird atmospheric long/drawn out synth music/tinkering from the early 90's... rather minimal... at points in middle of the tape music turns into hypnotic ritual ambient vibe that is actually pretty good, but then back to synth wanking techno attempts before and after the good stuff... a shorter/edited down/more coherent collection would'v been much better... that is just my opinion though, fans of this topic may be interested in it all.. https://www.discogs.com/Devils-G-and-Fiends-Even-Devils-Have-A-Past/release/5701008

You're definitely right, surprised I forgot this classic album and for so many reasons. I remember the supposed witches rumor in the 90's when it came out also before everyone knew this was Samoth and Fenriz's ex-wives, who now apparently disavow the album. I love the pictures that came in the booklet of the release which fits the atmosphere of the recording perfectly. Haunting, chilling, and frightening definitely suitable descriptions especially the last song with the violin..

cantle

Agreed- it is a classic album. First exposed to it on the CMI sampler "And Even Wolves Hid Their Teeth", for me that CD pretty much is the pinnacle of what this thread is about.

US tape label Dark Age Productions published some fantastic occult/experimental stuff, with nice packaging to boot. I love almost all of it. There is a cheese factor, but that does nothing to detract from the experience. My view may be skewered because of nostalgia, but I think I would love Cernunnos Woods, early Equitant and Akrabu even if I heard them for the first time today.

Furthermore: for a brief, beautiful time I seemed to be the only one to think this, so I bought a number of tapes dirt cheap. Now the market seems to have caught up, and if I'd like to proceed it would cost me at least 50 Euro/tape.

might fit the bill - not necessarily cheesy dungeon music but this is what would likely play in certain dungeons...

Let's ressurect this old husk of an topic since I happened to listen to this stuff today and find two albums I really enjoy.

Old Tower - The Rise Of The Specter and Thangorodrim - Taur-nu-Fuin. Not much to say. Cheesy, cheap synth stuff. Sounds like black metal intros extended into 30 - 40 minute albums. Good stuff.

NaturalOrthodoxy

Pierre of Ames Sanglantes/Akitsa does a great project along these lines, called Vilains Bonshommes. It's unfortunately not on YouTube or anything but there are track samples on the Boomkat store page for it: https://boomkat.com/products/l-eternite-retrouvee

Daudi Baldrs and Hliðskjálf by Burzum are good examples of this style too. Never got into Mortiis, but Varg's work along these lines is good for how primitive and cheap it sounds

Deadpriest

I guess this: https://blackeneddeath.bandcamp.com/album/true-nw-black-metal has an introductory feel through out (at least the first track). Sounds a bit like the noisier elements in Khanate's first album. Not exactly typical BM that's for sure. Interesting stuff!!
