One great thing about Reaper is that you can actually sidechain, LFO and envelope-automate EVERYTHING.
Reaper is actually fukt with internal/exteral midi routing ports with VST&Hardware... nightmare... way worse than just confusing AF...
it won't do some things without massive overkill amounts of extra effort... that personally use/need such MIDI function...
FL is way better in that aspect...
you can always load FL as VSTi for reaper for multitracking....
Reaper is so lightweight!!!
using it for multitracking recently instead of my other methods... Nuendo/ProTools
as supersimple fast DAW for the basics in sort of 4track tape style...
Thanks for promoting Reaper.

https://www.reaper.fm/https://www.reaper.fm/
awesome for noise/experimental fast recordings...
haven't attempted using it yet for more complex BPM based compositions as of yet...
0.999 is the last freeware version of REAPER...
starting with version 1.0 the license was changed to very reasonably priced uncrippled nag-free shareware...
Obviously, this official license FREE old Version of Reaper is now unsupported...

Despite having the latest version of Reaper, I downloaded this to see if it was worth it since this version last came out in 2006 and I see you post about it in a lot of places. But as soon as it loaded, it opened up the last project I had in the latest version of Reaper and plays it just fine. I'm surprised that it's this backwards compatible. The interface is also pretty similar to what is available now. No track grouping from what I can see, but the essentials are here. I'm impressed.

haven't tried installing the most recent version 6+ ...

Has anyone got a link to the original 'free' Aturia moog?  Ive had a couple of years away from music, combined with death of my old laptop means i lost it. Tried to download it from the official site and its been replaced with a new version with the record function disabled.

Also are there any free standalone vocoders out there?

Non Standalone Emulated Vocoders:

TAL-Vocoder is a vintage vocoder emulation with 11 bands that emulates the sound of vocoders from the early 80's. It includes analog modeled components in combination with digital algorithms such as the SFFT (Short-Time Fast Fourier Transform).
This vocoder does not make a direct convolution of the carrier and modulation signal as other digital vocoders maybe do. It includes an envelope follower for every of the eleven bands. This vocoder is optimized for voice processing and includes some algorithms for consonants to make the voice more intelligible.
The carrier signal is a VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) with a Pulse, Saw, Noise and SubOsc. But it's also possible to use the left stereo input as carrier. This way every sound source can be used as carrier signal. This plug-in supports every sample rate.

Personally use my Emulation of the EMS3000 yet it's probably way confusing AF for most humans & requires external MIDI...
British synth maker EMS are known not only for their classic VCS3, but also for their unique retro vocoders. Designed by Tim Orr, the EMS Vocoder 2000 is an excellent voice synthesizer comparable to the Roland SVC-350. It has been around since the late seventies, and is still available to this day. The Vocoder 2000 offered 16-channels of vocoding with filters, mic/line inputs, oscillator and noise sources, voiced/unvoiced detector, and slew/freeze control. The EMS Vocoder 3000 offers 16 channels of vocoding like the 2000, but with individual level controls for each band and newer knobs & switches on the front panel, plus a new LED signal meter. It came out in 1977. The EMS VOCODER was used in the original Battlestar Galactica TV series for creating the voices of the Cylons.

Glitchmachines - https://glitchmachines.com
Fracture & Hysteresis are available for free and they're a good introduction to GMs.

GM is xlent... picked up the bundle years ago, never regretted it. seem to run ok even on old computers, lnx/wine ... useful for a long time to come, since they come also in 32bit, which is a dying breed

polygon, cataract... mind blowing stuff. they come bundled with, and semi-hardwired to a ton of samples, but it's quite easy to set up your own sound sources, just save a new preset or track template once

Japsi

DBlue's Glitch (Win32) is an excellent and flexible VST for mangling your audio in all sorts of ways. I'm not sure whether there's a free Mac version, but they've got a paid version available that's compatible: https://www.audiopluginsforfree.com/glitch/

Another good one for slicing up your sounds, Squarepusher-style is Smart Electronix's LiveCut (Win32 + Mac).

It can be made to work in a 64-bit host by using JBridge: https://www.kvraudio.com/product/livecut_by_smart_electronix
