So what about your favourite vst plugins?

I tend to use them mostly for Foresta di ferro and other stuff.

I recently came across these done by Nicola Locci of Exagonal.

http://www.airwindows.com/category/free/ some of them are very subtle/functional or audiophile-ish technical 'tone' things, but there are some interesting/noisy ones. I use Channel4 quite a bit :) and the tesla coil one is pretty absurd

Electronix XL is really amazing, will give it a try soon.

despite soundin repetitive i'd like to mention again that reaper has an insane toolbox included...

another thing that i been using for years and can only recommend is W1 limiter from george yohng. (i have never noticed any difference between the sound of the new version or the old, so i been preferring to use the old version with the logic that it assumably is lighter on cpu since it does'nt have a gui): http://www.yohng.com/software/w1limit.html

bought the large version of this, it's pretty powerful: http://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-nova/

and these vintage monsters have been in my setup since my 1st machine:

http://www.geocities.jp/webmaster_of_sss/vst/index.html#cdist =a very flexible fuzz because of the steep filters. alas, only in mono. but i been able to dig out both low and high ends where there are none... this blended in with the stereo signal gives a lot of meat to the bones...

arcdev echotank 200, and it got even better with et301. the glitch things are also xlent. but that 301 is something... unfortunately their old website is gone, but someone on kvr made this pack:

and yea that sun ra thing gets quite insane if you feed it some... oh lets say... JUNK SOUNDS for convolution muhahahaha

Ambient software for granular synthesis. One of my favorites. Not free, but not expensive either.

Yep, plus you can sidechain literally everything in any of the plugins using "Parameter Modulation", you could probably build a modular synth in reaper :D

SunUnit

Madrona Labs for synths, Valhalla DSP for reverbs, Fabfilter for mastering tools.

Unfiltered Audio Sandman is a very cool and cheap delay/looper.

as sir salakapakka mentioned, audiobulb is interesting. i also picked up ambient + lissajous last year but i found the results quite underwhelming, specially that lissajous has so much potential but i think feature-wise it's not ready yet, and my pc can't really handle it anyway for some reason, its super choppy and hangs often. ambient is the better one of these for me..

i recommend these spectral tools from andy reeman:

re: modular reaper.. tim have you tried it from scratch? no 3rd party plugins? challenge accepted, dont know when to do it though...

I enjoy working with that and really like the visual part, but I think it till needs to develop!
I could not make it work as plugin since I am too stupid to configure the library, but loved the stand alone version!

i was waiting for audulus to come out for pc for many weeks/months, then it finally did. then i couldnt install it on my crapptacular 32bit machine (64b only).. but then i checked their forums and seems like it's not ready yet cos many people are reporting buggs. but that's gonna be pretty insane once it gets better.

ok then this guy d'incise made some crazy vst stuff years ago (xp times...) that still make insane results. and he's made some xlent abstract/electroacoustic releases, recommended: léthargie & autres animaux rugueux CD

Ha no, it's one for the 'maybe one day' pile. But yeah I plan to delve more into what's possible with automation etc

I like the http://www.stillwellaudio.com/ plugins. I think they still have some free versions. AU and VST. They tend to belong in the vintage repro camp. Most of them being Neve, SSL and other such classics. But they sound better to me than a lot of plugins that I've paid more for.
The Waldorf trio of plugins; Attack, D-Pole and PPG have been part of my arsenal for a very long time. These are not warm vintage virtual instruments. They are kind of edgy and awful and mean. You could pretty much write a whole song using the Attack drum machiner and PPG synth. I have.  The Dpole I dont use for a filter, I have better. I do like it's ring mod a lot though.
I also own one of those UAD boxes, and use it for an EMT reverb, Helios EQ and the bundled plugins.

I used to use a ton of other plugins, but the last few years I've gotten more into accomplishing things in the analog realm as much as possible.  Which isn't really that expensive if you are only recording one thing at a time anyway.
