yeah, gear prices in Australia are annoying - you either pay a premium, wait a loooooong time for a bargain or pay a small fortune in shipping

Shit yes. Also find quite a few stores in Australia only order certain gear on demand rather than stocking it as a matter of course. That makes it impossible to wonder in and get yor hands dirty before making a decision, so it can be a bit of a gamble.

I was looking at a filterbank online and found that the only stockiest was in NSW (I'm in VIC) and the online cost was 60% more than getting it shipped from Germany. It's such an unworkable situation.

I think DOD should start printing loyalty cards with points...

I threw a friend's Meat Box into my chain once for a set, and maybe it was just the lack of a foldback and the small bar PA etc, but I had difficulty hearing any real difference. I spose it's meant to be something you can feel more than anything, but I didn't notice any real thickening of the sound.

Maybe I'm missing the point of it, but does anyone use one in any particular way or with any particular gear? I'm tempted to get the reissue one day if I'm convinced it'd be worth it.

Bleak Existence

used to own the meat box and i think it a overated pedal like many other old dod one I had difficulty hearing any real difference too

in my opinion, the meatbox is only useful when used as the main source in a feedback loop.... use it that way and hear distinct sounds from some of your favorite late 90s/early 2000s usa noise recordings ;)

gonkulator on the other hand, which i used to own but sold for over $300 a decade ago, was basically the shittiest ring mod ever.

in my experience meat box works only if you have the right amplifier.

It might not be that much use inside a chain I think, maybe more like put the output of the chain thru it? But then again any octave/pitch effect can be great in a chain. it's basically making a 35hz tone and a 60hz boost so if you don't have subs/bass amp that actually reproduces those frequencies well then you won't get much apart from wasted amp power (this is not having actually used one tho, just my understanding from reading about how it works)

A decent feedback loop chain can generate all sorts of crazy low frequencies anyway if you know what you are doing so it might be kind of superfluous for some noise setups.

Still want one tho :3

I managed to add a pitch control (removed the volume control to make space) and now it's a pretty great ring mod which goes right down to tremelo speeds :) The new version has some control over the carrier frequency tho they've not added such an absurdly wide range as i did.

KILPATRICK AUDIO PHENOL:
this fella looks interesting! Two oscillators, a really nice sequencer and filter and tons of syncing options for other keyboards or your modular... This demo is pretty sweet, $900, checked the dimensions and it fits perfectly in a standard document style briefcase (like mine.)

I would need a much bigger house to fit this beauty that really put me into tears in 30 seconds...
a friend of mine will get one, and will try to borrow it often

I'm pretty well stocked for gear these days, but the Matrixbrute looks amazing.
I'd also love to get my hands on some of the new Bastl modules without the wood panels.
Not a fan of woodgrain+synthesizers.
I love that they are making eurorack modules that control solenoids, motors etc.
