it's ok until loud volumes. H2 generation 2 has better sound (mics of old H4) , better controls. I recommend buying that instead of old H2 if there is option.

Good. Don't know any similar recommendations. Also binaural possibility is good. and yeah, I'm talking about H2N. Not familiar with previous version of it.

H2n indeed. Old one has MUCH less battery time. It's not very handy thing if you're on longer trip and 2 basic batteries are empty in something like 4 hours? In H2n you can record about 24 hours with same batteries! With decent size memory card, you can fit in several dozens of hours of CD quality sound. I guess my own takes about 50 hours.

All recording functions works faster and easier with H2n than H2. Recording level function is without steps, and no need to navigate any menus. It has internal speaker, so in in some cases (like interviews) you don't necessary need headphones to check that recording sounds ok. Of course it's not too good speaker, but at least there is one.

So if one would have to think to buy old model cheaply, or H2n for little bit more, I'd recommend the new one. You'll save the money with batteries very quickly and handy systems is worth of it anyways.

So what is minus? Microphone in is "only" stereo-minijack. Same for line-in. For experts, you could want more heavy duty line inputs. But I never was dissatisfied with mini-jack quality.

I've been using the H4 for years. It's really good for what I need; especially for field recordings. Very easy to use. Also I chose it because of its 1/4" jack and xlr inputs. Not a big fan of mini jack inputs.

However it does chomp down a lot on battery life and I guess the alternative is to use rechargeable batteries.

The zoom H4N is pretty great, the batteries last for ages (and there's a 'stamina mode' for extra battery life at the expense of some features), and it can record thru the built in mics and the inputs at the same time, so you can eg record room sound and direct out from the mixer.

I believe that with all these machines the inputs aren't really a line level input and for best results recording from a mixer or other hardware you really need an attenuators. I've had decent results without one but on occasion some distortion/DC offset issues with hot signals even tho they weren't near clipping on the display. Going to try building attenuators soon and see if that helps.

Excellent!!! I might consider the H2N at some point. My H4 is already showing signs of wear and tear.
