The idea that you should only complain about things that make your own life "hard" is a strange one.

The point is not that it's important to say the word faggot in public, the point is that the people who are making it so that you can't should have no power over any aspect of public discourse, because they are idiots. And they do stop people from saying a lot more important things than faggot.

In principle I do agree. I do not think that the world should be so rounded off and safe that nobody can ever be hurt or offended. That is a recipe for an even blander world than the one in which we currently reside.

OTOH the people complaining about 'out of control PC' are usually straight white guys.
There are certainly people who are discriminated against because they are black or gay or whatever.  But then there are also people who you know, want to change the spelling of women to womyn, and other such semantic foolishness.
Like anything else, there is a reasonable amount of common sense, and there is a point too far.

Talking about this aspect of modern society here is almost pointless.
Industrial and experimental acts for several decades have made a lot of work around acts of transgression which are easy to misinterpret as racist, nazi, pornographic or worse. This is not a subculture which has ever been very PC or made much effort to accommodate sensibilities.

I am nominally white. At least white enough to get my ass kicked for it, and not non-white enough to get affirmative action for it.
I too think it is bullshit to say anyone's opinion is valid or invalid because of their race or gender or shoe size.
It is really crude when people play the victim card about PC, as if not saying faggot or nigger is huge burden.
Not saying that we all have to use/not use certain pronouns, call heteros 'cisgender' or apologize for being white.  I just think it is disingenuous when a bunch of straight white guys band together and start bitching about how they THEY are the victims here.
Last I checked, us straight white guys are running shit on this planet. We have it pretty good to be honest considering we are a slim minority of the total population of Earth.

There are a bunch of idiots running around with this new idea about 'white privilege'. They read Franz Fanon and apply what he said about French Algeria to 21st century America. Of course they probably haven't read the same books that Fanon did so they don't understand the Marxist angle at all. They just like calling liberals 'white supremacists' because it is probably the only thing a black person can say to a white person that will actually make them upset.
I bring this up because to me that is out of control PC.
When you know, a bunch of liberal whatevers try and make common cause with some working class people and do something constructive like protest Monsanto or Wall St or whatever people that drive Subarus do. Then the red army faction of the local junior college show up and rain on their parade.  "You can't do this thing about income inequality until you address 400 years of opression, and Native American genocide first. I'm waiting."

ps I'm like a post marxist libertarian militia anarchist or something. I resent leftists and rightists that think they should legislate us to not have abortions OR not drink high fructose corn syrup. I think a decentralized minimal government is best with just enough teeth to keep the global mega-corps from from becoming war lords. 
But then I'd love to be one of those war lords.
