Jack the Ripper could have been H.H. Holmes:

Holmes is more interesting than I remember. I don't think I've read anything other than in books that compile murderers. His murder house is certainly interesting!

Am listening to something at the moment but the title of this video sounds fairly conclusive plus I heard there was DNA evidence before.

Any suggestions for books on (Mexican) drug cartels?

I think I read this and that it was good:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/El-Narco-Bloody-Mexican-Cartels/dp/1408889463/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1502561972&sr=1-3&keywords=narcos

El Narco is recommended, the outsider perspective helps a lot, also recommend "In the Shadow of Saint Death" which is a more conventional history.

I would strongly recommend this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Murder-City-Ciudad-Economys-Killing/dp/1568584490/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1504079090&sr=1-3&keywords=murder+city

His writing style takes a while to get used to but this book just drowns in fatigue at the killings. If I remember correctly at the back of the book he tried to document all the killings in one year and gave up around July because there was so many.

Texas.  Football.  Guns.  Murder.  America...

I'm only spit-balling  but gas is expensive and it's more efficient if victims are all at one location so he invited them over. Or all of the victims were rooting for the team that beat the shit out of the shooter's favorite team.

Interestingly, the Cowboys won, decisively.  They were busy grilling burgers or hot dogs during the day; perhaps a vegetarian put in a request and it wasn't received well.

Technically this is a mass murder, isn't it?  Eight dead, not including gunman.  But since the shooter seems to be known and not a stranger, does that still count as a mass murder?  Or is this a case of just a little Texas fun gettin' out of hand?

Yeah, it's a mass shooting. I believe the FBI defines M.S. as 4+ victims in one location.

I just saw the incident on the news but no details other than the number of victims. It's hard to imagine what would drive someone to shoot everybody they invited over for burgers n' beer during the game. Texans do take their football seriously but this is ridiculous.

And yet, despite that this was a mass murder, it's gotten little to no coverage on the big news stations.  Yes, Hurricane Irma is getting her 15 minutes of fame but, c'mon.  If this had been at a mall or a school, this would be a big story.  If the shooter had been named Ahmed, this would be cause for another war.

Interestingly, Plano is an upscale neighborhood.  I'm not sure it's the Beverly Hills of Dallas but it's close.  Usually that warrants more coverage in our news here because, well, wealthy lives matter (more)....

Plano has a nice, grim history.  If interested, check out the teen suicide wave that hit the city in 1983.  Kids were offing themselves left and right and the whole country was all "what the fuck?"  It gave rise to TV movies (one with Charlie Sheen and another with Molly Ringwald) and some After School Specials about kids hanging it up.

Between the satanic panic, teen suicide, "this is your brain on drugs", and of course Crucifix, Discharge, DRI, Fear, etc...., I miss the '80s.

The local paper mentions that the female homeowner recently divorced her husband so it's probably going to the ex killing her & her family.

Plano is a city, not a neighborhood.

Confirmed that ex-husband is the killer:

School shooting up here in Washington State.  Noteworthy if only because shooter loved Breaking Bad.  It IS a fantastic show.  More disturbing (and why I enclosed a Yahoo link) are Yahoo commenters.  I don't know but I'm guessing if you wanted a fair assessment of this country's net IQ and the mean level of its "intelligence", look no further than Yahoo comments on any story.  We Americans just can't shut the hell up.
