Suspicious Activity

Have you ever found smut where you least expect it?

I live in a Dutch Christian Reformed, conservative city with a healthy dose of Catholicism thrown in. A good place
to raise a straight laced family, play sports, and you're surrounded by hipster restaurants, bars, craft breweries,
distilleries, over priced coffee shops and every corporate chain store you can imagine, all within a nice white
picket fence.
There is surprisingly a good noise scene here, and has been for quite sometime. One of the best in the Midwest.
Underground culture exists, but nothing too edgy. Occasional leather night at secret gay club, and I know of one
full-time dominatrix. Though, inspiration for something different than the normal surroundings is still quite thin.
Like any noise pervert would do, I've taken up the hobby of collage making from different magazine sources. Mostly
purchased online and from Europe. Some borrowed from friends. Sometimes photos I've shot myself.
Due to the rising shipping costs of everything good from overseas, I've grown tired of paying more than I should for printed
materials to scratch my artistic itch. One Saturday afternoon I decided to give my local bookstore a call, expecting to
not get any answers, but yet I was wrong. A sweet lady in her 40's answers...
Conversation went something like this:
"Hello, ____ Bookstore. How can I help you?"
"Yes, I was wondering if you had any vintage fetish magazines or vintage leather magazines specifically in stock?
(I've learned it's best to be direct and to the point instead of beating around the bush with this type of thing)
"Uh... well, is there any specific title you're looking for?"
"Anything, really. Atom Age but I know those are very rare so..."
"Well, my husband and I just bought this shop and he's been going through the basement and sorting out
books. He has found some... hidden... things from the previous owners. It might be something you're interested in.
He isn't in the shop right now but should be back within the hour if you'd like to come in?"
"Yes, I'll see you within the hour, then"

After hanging up I couldn't contain my excitement. I mean, what kind of materials were found in that old dusty
basement? Why "hidden"? And how much stock? I knew very little about the previous bookstore owners other than
that they were two older gay men. Maybe they left behind old Drummer magazines, or Dungeon Master issues?

There weren't too many customers when I arrived a little later. The sweet lady who answered the phone had
greeted me at the door.
"Hello, how are you?"
"I'm doing well. I called earlier about some... magazines"
Her face turned a certain way. Not scared, not confused, but just... a way.
"Ah, yes, you'll have to talk to him" and she points to her husband behind the register, talking to customers.
I made my way towards to other end of the bookstore and started perusing different comics and whatnot, waiting
for a moment when I could ask the shop owner where the smut was. Finally, after about 15 minutes of him talking
about the latest Batman movie with some patrons, he made his way over towards me.

He opens up a shelf and pulls out a large white pull box.
"Hey, so I have some... stuff... down here for you. I think you might, uh, find what you're looking for."
I thanked him and eagerly started flipping through titles.

There was a small variety of magazines inside, all bagged and boarded. Mostly untouched. Titles like
Corporal, Spank, Nugget, various magazines devoted to reader submitted ads, a couple of copies of Janus,
Latent Image. He was basically sitting on a goldmine of smut. For being in the basement for who knows how long,
they all appear in good condition.

After talking with the owner a little more, it turns out that there is plenty of more magazines like this in the basement
that he still has to go through. None of it is priced yet, and due to location of the shop in this socially conservative
town, he doesn't quite know how to display these out in the public without catching complaints. He then says what
most fans of this type of rare items loves to hear -- "I tend to play favorites, and I see that you're interested in these, so
I'll let you have priority of these magazines before I let anyone else look at them".

I'm not sure what else may be in that basement but I'll be sure to check back every couple of weeks to see if anything
else interesting is stirred up.

I suppose this is not very "hidden", but back in the day, basically every 2nd hand bookstore would have some smut. Not like selection, but just random things someone brought in. Same was in the flea markets when they were more wild business. Nowadays the flea markets usually enforce strict family friendly policy. It's all about approach where young mothers can sell & buy children clothes, without worrying about some fisting VHS tapes being on next table.

When I had just moved into Lahti city, I remember when I was checking out flea market and one table had couple scat magazines. Those were the shitty CHOC  stuff, what are kind of notoriously shitty. Book & Film International, choc, that type of brands that will usually guarantee they will be really bad, but focusing on some obscene niche interest. I was looking at couple full color magazine, focusing on dwarves, pissing and shitting. Thinking, it ain't maybe worth the fairly cheap price tag... and not buying it. Next day regretting this mistake. Kind of pre-internet days and it doesn't have to be good. It can be just odd and bizarre. And dwarves getting into nasty sex was at the time, obscure enough. Return there and someone else had bought the magazines. Damn!

Of course I found them later on elsewhere, but not from flea market in middle of city...

Not so much "hidden" as "hidden in plain sight" for me.  I know a guy who lives in one of the less nice parts of town, to put it nicely, and he told me that he regularly sees Black Israelites handing out fliers to people who pass by.  Despite getting some wierd looks for being white, he obtained a few of those fliers to give to me.  In addition to the obvious racism, one of the fliers also had an interesting description of Colonel Custer that was unexpectedly sexually violent:

"His troopers made coin purses from the scrotums of Indian men and ornaments for their saddle horns out of the vaginas of Indian women."

I guess this is more like a shocking historical detail than a perversion, but I found it sort of funny that these were passed out on a street corner!

cantle

I miss the days of cultivating contacts in the 2nd hand markets for getting hold of stuff... much as you can find it all on line it was better when you chanced upon it

Any updates on this?

Suspicious Activity

I haven't been back in a while but I've bought pretty much everything that was useful to me. There are a couple of magazines left that I've been wanting to buy but I've been low on spending money lately, or just spending it all on beer. There still remains a dozen or so spanking magazines which isn't really my cup of tea. I also understand that I'm the only one the owners are letting dig through that box so I imagine them being there for a while. Imagining that box of vintage smut just collecting dust hidden in a shelf somewhere by the recent comic book section is pretty funny to me.

I did however recently buy a magazine from Where Frost Reigns and had a good experience with that. Pretty quick shipping to the states. Heading to NYC next month for Summer Scum and would love to check out any seedy places there for porn... if anyone has suggestions, chime in!

Being the only person seemingly interested in it, I am surprised that they are not giving to you just for the sake of getting rid of it.  The store owners must have a sense of their value.

Speaking of Where Frost Reigns, his blog/newsletter is fantastic.  Receiving them in my email is like getting a mini history lesson in Japanese porn history!

Well in Greece and Athens especially it's still quite possible to find all kinds of deviant stuff. Mainly around Omonoia and Monastiraki there are old flea market stores with porn dvds, very decent old porn mags, hardcore stuff and more soft. Apart from print you can still find dvd stores, having a huge selection of all kinds of porn, even a good selection of scat, piss and bestiality. Outside of this small part of the center, there are also good porn shops that may have a small old stack of vintage magazines that I have found. Certainly one of the few perks of living in the Balkans, we have not been gentrified to that extend, yet.

Oh and last thing, there is one bookstore, with some amazing vinyls as well, specialising in old underground books, photography, occult, ancient art, weird stuff etc. You even had some original Boiled Angel issues, some Sotos in the past, and recently some REsearch issues, which are very rare to surface in Greece. Quite possibly my favourite place to visit when bookhunting. It's called Strange Attractor, sadly no internet presence, but if you end up here somehow, I will help those interested.

Suspicious Activity

I went back after several months of not visiting and the store looks a lot more organized. Although the stack of magazines that I had looked through were still hidden in a shelf. It took myself and one of the owners about 20 minutes to locate it amongst all of the comics it was hidden within. Lo and behold the box was found, but no updated material. She then showed me a side room I've never been in before and pointed to the top shelf. "This is more of what you'd be interested in. I don't have a place to stock it so I shoved it all up here." Its a dimly lit hallway with a bunch of books in dutch and a very esoteric ladder to use. Climbing towards the top, I spotted a few promising titles but had little luck. Couple of fetish books but still somewhat mild. A gay porn vhs. Many illustrated sex guides. Random book on the Klan... basically a catch all for all the things the new owners don't know what to do with. I understand there's plenty more books and hidden items in the basement but they've yet to go through it all. I suppose I'll keep this thread updated with any new finds, for the few of you who are curious.
Would still like to hear more stories of smut where you least expect it or seedy underground archives that exist!

Not as shocking or interesting, but I found a first edition English hardback of Story of O at my local friends' of the library bookstore for like $2.
