Haven't found a SHIFT thread (sorry, if I've overseen one), so let's start this one.
I was just listening to "Unable to abide the silence of the world" - CD.
My current favourite is "Abandon" and I'm also looking forward to some new material!? Would be great!

Don't have time at the moment for further thoughts, so please share your  comments on this project and your favourite records!

Abandon is the record i return to when i want to listen to Shift. Played the Hatet 7" a lot when i got it but haven't heard it in a while.

"Altamont Rising" remains among my favourite of his releases. It's got, to my ears, a dirtier and rawer sound than some other releases, a lot of immediate fury. And you've got to love the concept. Fucking hippy cunts.

"Creation and Space" is also a favourite, seems like a sound-defining album to me, like setting a template that was followed up with his split with Sick Seed - that sudden drop in sound to something quiet that then slowly builds up to more intense gravity. I haven't heard much of his earlier material but from what I have I think he started Shift as a kind of Death Industrial project (I know he talked about this in his interview in SI, but I haven't read it in ages). He's managed to retain that "you're fucked, you just don't know it yet" atmosphere.

I hear why people dig "Abandon". It's very well composed as an album. I particularly love "Armed, Disturbed, Hostile" (just got in on right now). Restrained and focussed contempt and energy. Kind of like what "doom drone" should sound like.

I also highly rate his collaboration with Hal Hutchinson. A perfect combination of heavy synth tones and metal crashing destruction.

great project, I´ve almost everything he released. "Creation & Space" has been the first record I got from him and the combination of artwork plus monolithic music immediately had a grip on me. "Altamont Rising" and the split with Sick Seed are two other very good works, abrasive and relentless. I would suggest also the tape / 10´´"Rumination", in my opinion pretty different from the previous works and more directed to a straighter death industrial direction, obscure and "stripped down" so to say. A little shout out also to the guy behind the project (which is also the mastermind of Unrest Productions), I got in touch with him over Facebook when I was moving the first steps in the world of music production and he´s been pretty kind in giving hints and suggestions.
The concept is uncomfortable and disturbing, exactly as industrial music is supposed to be.

Amazing record, especially the track "Their Fall Will Be Harder Than Ours". Another favourite of mine is the track "Unenmeshings" which appeared on the Tesco "Projekt Neue Ordnung" 4LP a couple of years ago. For albums, it'd have to be "Abandon", and esp. that last, long piece.

I haven't listened to this, but I have it bookmarked.  podcast available in the usual places and youtube.

DBL#4 Martin SHIFT. When I'd initially thought of the idea to speak about the DIY attitude within music I didn't want to stick to one genre in particular. That said it usually goes hand in hand with punk rock, although not really the case here.
Martin conceived the industrial/power electronics project SHIFT in Sweden in 1997 and moved it to the UK for nearly 20 years before returning back home again.
I first met him via the  doom-metal message boards in the early/mid 2000s. At this point it was the only real meeting place for people into extreme music forms. The Southern Lord forum in particular attracted lots of people from the UK (specifically the NE). We'd made friends because of his label Unrest productions who I'd help out with in 07/08. Lots of phone calls over various logistics were made and he was definitely a part of things that were happening during that period.
Martin is very straight ahead and intense about his music but he's always had my respect with what he's achieved and his uncompromising do it yourself mentality. We hadn't spoken in some years and it was my first time ever interviewing but it turned out great and really interesting hearing his perspective.
Interview recorded back in May while he was in rural Sweden and didn't have a proper internet connection. Either way it's a great insight for anyone involved in the noisier more experimental UK scene in the 2000s.

The DBL interview is great and "Abandon" was one of my favourite records of 2017. Time to revisit!

My favorite still too. All of it is excellent however.

As everyone's said, Shift is great. Personally I lean towards the heavy sound he adopted on Abandon and the Rumination 10 inch. My record player struggles with playing this one though, does anyone have similar issues? I have 2 copies with the same problem.

Strength of SHIFT has been that while having several of qualities that makes the sound of project, none of the releases are the same. Each album is very different from previous. One can approach them in a way of seeing progress -which there is- but also simply acknowledging merely that they are different. For specific listening, one may want to take older album, even if newer works are certainly more advanced. I don't think one needs to really compare Abandon and Bulk, in terms of which is "better", since they are so different.

Personal favorites remain, from older works SLEEP PARALYSIS seemed to take big leap forward and therefore made long lasting impact even if Shift has progressed further. ALTAMONT RISING, is quite unbeatable in its negativity and malicious spitefulness. But also compositionally and in terms of fine detail of the fuzz and tone. And finally ABANDON, in my ears was good conclusion of this specific approach of musical qualities and "conceptual sounds".

I am quite curious what would be next!? Of course there are smaller releases, where leap to new approach is not so drastic, but I am curious what could be the approach of next full length album?

I agree.
Martin's project has an unique approach where research on sound and aesthetic go together.
I was impressed when seeing him live the amount of gear he brought on stage and used EVERYTHING of it. Personal fave Altamont Rising.

As others have said, one of the best things about SHIFT is that each album sounds and feels unique while also still being clearly a SHIFT album. Because I heard Bulk and Morose first they'll probably always be the ones I return to most, but Altamont Rising feels like a pretty perfect album. The Have No Fury 7" is also really different but very good.

edit...
fuck I forgot how good the Sick Seed split is too.
