It seems there's no topic for VDO yet. I just saw a new CD is out called Irene's Cunt. I'd be curious to know what it's like before buying it, as I don't want to be burned like with The Great Masturbator, which is only bell sounds with long silences in between, for 50 minutes. I get that VDO is some sort of Surrealist concept thing, but I rarely like conceptual music.

I've heard downloads of the 4 classic LPs from the '80s, and while I wouldn't listen to them often, it'd still be nice to have a reissue of them as a CD box set. I've never heard Un Chien Catalan, The Perpignan Killings or Music for the Blind. Any opinions about these? Apparently the latter is a violin piece by a classical composer.

I like the newer releases with drums: Live in Berlin (again, only heard a rip, or maybe on Youtube, but I'd buy it if it was cheaper) and the split 7" with New Noveta.

I haven't heard the LP with The New Blockaders, but according to Discogs, the music is solely by TNB.

The Perpignan Killings is a compilation of the four classic picture disc LPs (treated).

Un Chien Catalan is a superb field recording of a Harley Davidson driving around a Spanish village.

Music For The Blind is some of Dali's favourite violin music, by Enrico Toselli. If I remember correctly.

My prediction is that people will still be listening to these releases long after many of today's screamers and droners are forgotten.

I have yet to immerse myself in Irene's Cunt, but it is fair to say that I am as excited about it as this young lady clearly is:

Here is my review taken from Vital Weekly Magazine.

VAGINA DENTATA ORGAN – IRENE'S CUNT (CD by World Satanic Network System) Let's start with a bit of history: in 1928 the French surrealist poet and novelist Louis Aragon published his short novel 'Le Con d'Irène' or, in plain English, 'Irene's Cunt'. The novel details the life and contemplations of an older man who has lost his ability to speak and move because of syphilis. Due to the novel's slightly subversive content, Aragon used the pseudonym Albert de Routisie. Interestingly enough, even though the novel was considered extremely controversial in the 1920s, Aragon himself would later be nominated for a Nobel Prize for literature no less than four times! Serving in the French army in World War II, Aragon was awarded the Croix de guerre (War Cross) and the military medal for acts of bravery. After the defeat of the French army, Aragon joined the French resistance, both as a poet as organizer of resistance acts. Following the war Aragon became involved in Communism and publishing. In his final years he resumed to his surrealistic writing before passing on in December 1982. This album, tantalizingly packed in a silver foil bag, not un-reminiscent of those 1970s bags in which you would purchase your pornographic magazines, is intended as tribute to the famous novelist and his infamous novel. Now, as with Aragon it is impossible to predict Vagina Dentata Organ. The solo project of Catalan surreal artist Jordi Valls, VDO has been releasing intriguingly unpredictable sound since 1983. Therefore, I am not going to tell you what Irene's Cunt is holding for you. You, dear reader, will have to buy a copy of the album and experience that familiar tantalizing excitement, reminiscent of the aforementioned magazine bag, of opening that silver foil bag and checking out its content. Be prepared for the unexpected. Nothing is what is seems – certainly not Irene's cunt (FK).

Yes, I've read it, that's how I found out about this new album. While I appreciate why you didn't write anything about the actual album, I'd still like to know what kind of music it is before I decide whether to spend 20+ euros on it :).

The pic disc on Harbinger is recommended. I love the marching band drumming.

Actually that doesn't sound too bad to me, I might try and get that one.

EDIT - yea, not bad. Not great, but not bad -

as i see it VDO has nothing to do with "music" and imo you are missing the point if you bring in a "hit or miss" thinking, as the sound itself is just one part of the whole, those are not (just) records or cd's but fanatic objects and self-contained artworks. the vital weekly review is actually quite on the point, it maybe tells you more about the work than just listening to the sound as mp3 ever could.

Yea, I think we all get "the point" about VDO but it's also okay to personally discriminate and decide if you like to actually listen to something or not. It's okay to like what you listen to, you're not betraying any artistic value by doing so.

Bloated Slutbag

My first Vagina was the track on the Ohrenschrauben lp, which is still favorite. Second exposure was Music For Hashishans, which is the original full length from which the Ohrenschrauben track is taken. Both actually got a lot of play on college radio I recall.  I've got a least one tape of radio dj reading out the sleeve notes with mock formality, re- "...The original Assassins were a religious sect in Persia, they killed as a matter of conviction..."  Sounds were apparently culled from recordings of wolves, but since I didn't know that when I first heard the comp track I thought it sounded rather like some guy belching out fake animal noises, playing with speed and pitch and layering for frenetic effect. Really needs to be played in full to achieve the desired effect (unless your "sexual games and blood rituals" are rather short lived... which is completely probable.)

Slightly preferable to Un Chien Catalan, but maybe just a matter of taste. Bells vs motorcycles. Masahiko Ohno would probably wank himself silly over it.

It's the sound of an audience clapping for 38 minutes. I found it on a Russian blog.

It's just crap. I didn't keep the file I downloaded.  If I had paid for it, I'd been pissed off for such a waste of cash.

Thanks, I won't buy it then.

For people who are only interested in the sonic aspects of VDO I heartily recommend this recent tribute soundscape by Jose Macabra:

People of broader sensibilities may be interested in the other updates to my comrade's VDO fanatics site, which include details of a blood paintings exhibition in Hong Kong, Jordi Valls' obituary for Genesis P-Orridge and an amusing video in which some journalists discuss the VDO name:

Martin Locker's recording project P Y R E : N U M E N sounds as if it's cut from the same cloth as something like VDO's The Triumph of The Flesh/back when Jordi Vallis's project had more substance + direction.
