Instruments, proper training, experience, an audience, a venue, a purpose, philosophy or point — none were necessary for Gnarlos (Bananafish's Seymour Glass) and Lucian Tielens formed the Bren't Lewiis Ensemble in the early 1980s in their rural Northern California hometown. Visionaries, outsiders, wankers, legit musicians, and fellow freaks joined up, some permanently, some temporarily, all dragging something with them (instruments, skills, voices that could be heard from the next building, ideas, energy, baggies). In two or three years they released four cassettes, performed six or seven shows, and then entered a brief, 27-year period of dormancy. They were jostled back into consciousness in 2009 with the release of the Butte County Free Music Society's Induced Musical Spasticity, a 4xLP boxset that Bruce Russell praised in a UK porn magazine as "largely lacking in merit. Wildly blending and bending genres — from primitive tape collage, to primitive rock dunt and electronic twarnk (including radio plays and a Faust-inspired splice opera — the playing and recording are generally poor, and the whole thing seems to have been put together specifically to annoy the hell out of listeners." Subsequent to the boxset, they released Three Christs of Ypsilanti (Siltbreeze 2010), At The North Pole, Easter Day, 1982 (What The... 2010), and enough CDRs on the BUFMS label to keep a Frisbee golf tournament stocked all weekend. They performed at the 2011 Colour Out Of Space festival in Brighton, England, and more recently in San Francisco and Oakland (on bills with Macronympha's Rodger Stella more often than not). They have collaborated with Silvia Kastel and Ninni Morgia, Blood Stereo, and The Tenses.
