A collection of live recordings initially intended as a bonus for a special edition version of Blood Rhythms' 2015 LP "Assembly" that never happened, these are reissued recordings from a scarce tape in 2009, remastered by Zach Adams.
Live group performances around this time featured Daniel Burke (Illusion of Safety), Michael Krause (Death Factory), Michael Kendrick (Rope), Travis (ONO), and several other appearances from friends and respected stalwarts. There is a gradual evolution evident here, where the first show (April Fool's Day, 2007) started with as many blaring horns as could be mustered, and from there, group outings gradually morphed into a sort of krautrock / industrial / scrap metal / synth damage ensemble.
All recordings here were captured direct from the soundboard (before post production/meddling), except for Ronny's, and Elastic Arts, which was mixed down from a room recording and a direct soundboard recording.

Architeuthis Dux is a noise unit from Austin, TX, perhaps best known for their heavily engaging, blistering harsh noise performances. Active since 2012, the duo of Kenny Brieger and Tony Duran have created an impressive oeuvre of mostly limited CDR editions, some in quantities as low as 15 copies.
Through over a dozen releases, there have, on many occasions, been moments of what one can only call "blissed out abrasions"; Traversing territory that comes off with an almost kraut-rock oriented synth meltdown glaze, topped off with lo-fi metallic clang, shrieking industrial grit, and just generally bleak and tortured, surgical steel atmospheres.
NO PART OF IT proposed to hone in on these reflective moments, and compiled a morass of penetrating, expertly organized cacophony that serves to stand apart, or give way to, the rest of Architeuthis Dux's more aggressive power electronics and heavy electronic work. The result is just under an hour of crisp sampling, damaged percussion, and simultaneously subdued, yet clearly pissed off pedal action that could stand up to SPK's early live sets, or Nurse With Wound's darkest moments.

Machine Listener began with such a name due to a project that is based on exploring and exploiting inherent characteristics from machines, and making compositions from them. In the beginning, it seems that everything from home printers to huge factory generators were used as sources. Their electromagnetic signals or the frequencies they emitted, or simply the noises they make, were the basis of compositions by sound artist Matthew Gallagher. Eventually, of course, Gallagher moved into sourcing the potential of synthesizers, both as machines and as instruments.
It can be assumed that Machine Listener's pure synth LP ("Endless Coil"), now out on Tusco Embassy (where we can guess that machines were used for their proper intention) came after "Sentient System", released in extremely limited quantities by noise-filth veteran Wyatt Howland (Skin Graft) on his own SK SK label in 2014. It is not up to us to say how "Sentient System" was created, but it is safe to assume that a little of both of these approaches were traversed, and as a result, "Sentient System" could be considered the apex of Machine Listener's adventures with mechanical, aleatoric components of industry.
Whatever the case may be, "Sentient System" is unlike any other recording you'll ever hear. It is both excellent in terms of composition and also permeated with a conceptually sound "hands off" approach, with caterwauling animal behavior, screeching panic signals and pervasive cicada hum. Some segments of these soundscapes could fit perfectly as cerebral, revelatory moments in a particularly head-fucked horror film, hewn with a certain feeling for a desolate science fiction future, or simply in mindscapes where pure noise is the end and the means. The release stands on its own, and apart from the rest, but at the same time is extremely important in adding to the legacy of industrial noise.
Originally limited to a criminally low quantity of copies, we here at NO PART OF IT are extremely excited to bring this release to a wider audience.

Architeuthis Dux was aired on Wm. Berger's My Castle of Quiet (WFMU) radio show.

That release as well as A.D.'s collaboration with Arvo Zylo was reviewed in Vital Weekly last week.

ARCHITEUTHIS DUX - SUBMERGENCE (CDR by No Part of It)
ARCHITEUTHIS DUX & ARVO ZYLO - THE UNBEGOTTEN SOURCE (CDR by Ka-Rye-Eye Tapes)

Two times music by Architeuthis Dux, a duo of Kenny Brieger and Tony Duran, of which the second
is in collaboration with the hyper active Arvo Zyla. I never heard of them, so I started with the one
that this duo did alone. There is nothing on both covers that might give us a clue as to what kind
of instruments are used by them, but judging by the eight tracks here one could easily think these
men have a variety of electronic gadgets, those lovely small synthesizers, stomp boxes and guitars
at their disposal, and perhaps there is some form of percussion, of the metal variety, even it is more
or less played subtle and fed through a bunch of sound effects as well. They hail from Austin, Texas
and work together since 2012 in the field of power electronics. Judging by the quality of the
recording, I would think that these eight pieces are taped in front of an audience, or picked up
with a bunch of microphones in their rehearsal space, i.e. quite raw and with some distance
between where the sound is actually produced and the location of the microphone. I was reminded
of other US industrialists, especially Boy Dirt Car and their various offshoots. Maybe it's all part of
the Architeuthis Dux aesthetics not to do a thoroughly refined recording, but somehow I think this
kind of music, played the way it is now, comes across much better in situ, preferably an old factory
building, mid winter and no heather, as to unease the experience. Sitting at home, with this
somewhat distant sound is like listening to a bootleg really, which is not bad, but also not ideal.
With No Part Of It label boss Arvo Zylo Architeuthis Dux team up for six-song release called
'The Unbegotten Source', of which there is no further information available as to the how/when/
what/where. Unlike 'Submergency' the recording quality is more 'studio' like, without that 'live in
a room presence'; it is something that hits you in the face and it hits you very hard. Much of this
music is very noisy and very loud, all on the overload mode, but it is not something that is without
variation. The opening of 'Execration Texts' has a rhythm machine and within the twenty-four
minutes changes a few times from super loud to a bit quieter, and overall aims at a more
psychedelic noise approach. The other five pieces are shorter and within a track not with that
many changes. Lots of feedback, erecting walls of the stuff, mucho distortion and, as said,
overall with more care for production values, so it all sounds much louder and way more direct
than the Architeuthis Dux release, but I am not sure which one I prefer; if I had to choose I would
go for that one rather than the collaboration effort, which sounded too clean cut noise for me,
even with all the variation thrown in. The 'solo' one by Architeuthis Dux had an overall distinct,
retro 80s cassette quality to it, which I think sounded better to these ears. The other one is for
those who love to have their Harsh Noise Wall with some additional wallpaper on it. (FdW)

By the way, the 333REDUX release is going to have to be in two different editions.  The Data DVD version, which is available now, features 33 tracks, including 5 videos and one surround sound piece, in FLAC and high quality mp3.  There will still be a pro menu version with 28 tracks and a link to stream the other 5 tracks, due to the unforeseen reformatting inherent in pro menu configuration.  We hope it will be available some time this month.  Another test copy is on the way, working out some glitches.

MACHINE LISTENER - SENTIENT SYSTEM (CDR by No Part Of It)
333REDUX (DVDR by No Part Of It)

This was released before, by Sk Sk in an extremely small edition, it now is re-issued by No Part Of It.
Machine Listener is Matthew Gallagher, and he also has a LP on Tusco Embassy, which is a pure
synth album. This particular CDR uses machines, of whatever kind, and mostly the electro-magnetic
sounds they produce; this was before Gallagher's moved in the realm of synthesizers. No Part Of It
write "whatever the case may be, "Sentient System" is unlike any other recording you'll ever hear",
which seems to me a very bold statement, as what I hear sounds most of the time delving in the
old school industrial music, via raw sounds, much feedback, loops of concrete noise (or machines,
who knows?), but also into a much quieter and subdued version of that, such as in 'Primeval
Forest/Sentinel', which is a very beautiful ambient piece. His noise is very rough, going through
wild stages of crushing distortion and feedback, with all the effects open to the max. It is
something I heard before, and a lot. The noise of Machine Listener was at times a bit too simple
for my taste, but in those pieces where he pulls back and allows his sounds to breath, where he
gives them a bit of space, it actually worked much better for me. Here too I believe I didn't hear
something that wasn't heard before, but it simply was altogether more appealing to me. I'd be
curious to hear what Machine Listener does when it comes to 'pure synth'.
The other release i9s a DVDR with some eight hours of music, all of which is based upon
music by Arvo Zylo's '333' by 33 different artists. None of them received any specific stems
from Zylo, but rather 'the whole thing' to work with. Among these artists I recognized a handful
of names, such as Vertonen, Daniel Burke, Jliat, Blood Rhythms, Hans Grusel, Thirteen Hurts, Bran
(...) Pos, Dave Phillips, Sudden Infant, Somnoroase Pasarele and that means that most of the
others I never heard of; people like Bull of Heaven, Bruce Lamont, Bride, Skulsyr (TOMB, Dreadlords),
Protman, Insect Deli, Nows, Trou, Marlo Eggplant and so many others. I also never heard the original
so it's a bit difficult to judge this; it must surely a varied bunch of sounds in the original, as the
results/remixes/re-whatever is also a varied bunch, even when the words 'drone' and 'noise' were
noted the most. Some of these pieces are very long, forty minutes for Blood Rhythms for instance
up to three hours for Jliat (Insect Deli seems to have the shortest remix, thirty-seven seconds);
those are exceptions of course, most of the tracks are between three and fifteen minutes. There is
no track listing on the cover so one has to put the DVD-R in and keep an eye on what is playing -
right now, let me see, a rather rhythmic piece by Somnoroase Pasarele, which is quite nice. I rather
look at a box, also to know what's coming on next, Enoxeaon, it seems. Best is to treat the whole
thing like a radio program of experimental music that goes on and on. I had a similar experience
last week when I played that release that was mentioned in Vital Weekly, 'Homework 1', which was
over seven hours of drone music, in all its variations. Maybe it is the time of the year that has these
long releases, seven hours of Kevin Drumm, three of Splinter Orchestra, eight of '333 Redux', one
easily passes the horrible slow days between Christmas and New Year's Eve. And sometimes you
just skip one, all too noisy beast, or loop track (sorry about that, Jliat!). (FdW)
