Hello,

I was wondering how many of you put to use an MS-20 for your recordings and/or live work. I've gotten a good hold of it in terms of getting it to drone out pretty intensely but am becoming more and more interested in learning how to sequence it (I have a Dark Time) and/or use the patch bay to make some more sounds. Certainly not looking for tutorials or even for "the golden answer," but seeing that it has been such an important synth in the history of power electronics/extreme noise, I figured I'd ask some of y'all. Not working with very much gear, actually, so the sequencer and the MS-20 plus mixer is really what I'm working with in terms of generating a sound-rig with the MS-20.

in the 90's early 2000 I used a lot ms20 for drones and backing tracks. now I use it mostly as a filter. I used to borrow one froma  friend. Now I have the mini version and as said it does what it says!

Have you got the SQ-1 sequencer as well Marco? I'm curious to hear impressions from people using it for PE material, either with the MS-20 (original or Mini), or even with a Minibrute.

tiny_tove

Yes.
I got it! Have not worked on it as much as I would have liked in the past few weeks, but connected to mini brute definitely did its work. Still have to tray it with the ms20 and other gear.
I have noticed there is going to be a new edition of the ms20 desktop kit that also include that.
considering your work as Isomer I would definitely give it a try.

I got mine just today.

So far I fed the phones to signal in, then signal out to total. Then I fed white noise to sample and hold and hooked that to trig in.

I dont know what the fuck im doing but I got some nice GO distorted pulses

dont know what anyone else does but Im aware that Haus Arafna,GO,Anenzephalia,Puce Mary,MB and probably tons others use it

Euro Trash Bazooka

I have one as well.

I think the interest of such a synth is that everyone can use it the way they want as it offers such a wide array of sound possibilities. Its users just have to be creative.

agree.

its definitely a lot to wrap your head around though

That's what I love about it though. It's a very didactic synth.

I printed plenty of blank pages of the synth's panel so I can experiment a lot and write down all the settings and whatnot on them, and I can compare various settings and try to understand how things work in them. I really love that.

Anyone going to have a crack at the Khaki version of the full size remake of the MS20? Very tempting. It's up for pre order.

Bleak Existence

how much they ask for the full size reissue of the ms 20 ?

Eigen Bast

about 1400 USD...tempting indeed ! likely to retain it's value given the "limited edition" nature

That is about the same price as the Korg Mini 2600 and nearly 3 x the Behringer. I think you get more bangs per buck with the 2600.
If you check out the Korg it comes ion its own travel case -  so ideal for live work.  I had a MS20 mini - but found it limiting... semi modular - but
a keyboard dominated synth IMO. The 2600 not so.

I use it for both drones / pads and leads, sometimes it needs a certain dose of "enhancement" but of course does it work also by its own, and I think is irreplaceable if it comes to getting the typical dirty and aggressive sound of classic industrial. Besides the more or less classic patches, I found a very interesting combination by using it together with a Maths module to obtain more complex and sometimes syncopated oscillations.

That book is pretty good, I use it too from time to time.
I think that the fat sound (but, at least with the Mini, sometimes too weak in terms of gain, it needs to be amplified / boosted properly) and the semi-modular versatility are the two strengths of this synth. With some inspiration, the limits are very wide and the dirty typical sound of MS-20 makes the rest. I used to patch it with a Maths in order to give an additional syncopate oscillation and the result was really sick!!!
