Media Storage/Shelving

Didn't know where to post this topic, move it if it needs to be. So I'm in the process of moving into a new house and I want to do some type of shelving in one room to display/store my entire collection. I've got VHS, Laserdiscs, LPs, cassettes, CDs, 7"s, all of the weird shaped tapes and box sets, and books ranging from regular novels to oversized art books.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get adjustable shelving that can accommodate the varying sizes of media? I was thinking of maybe just building my own shelving instead of buying it. For those who have done that, any recommendations on materials or methods? Thanks in advance.

ikea for my 12" vinyl, easy, basic, solid, cheap.

Yea I saw that on NWN! too, the dude not only fucked up building it but he put it sideways.

I have an old bookshelf because I namely collect tapes as seeing that I haven't had a record player in going on 2 years now. When I get back to collecting wax I'll probably look into some Ikea shit.

I use these for CD and oversized tapes. Each slot can be adjusted, so keeps well lots of different sizes:



For places, where I can't put things on the floor, I have put these on the wall:


horizontal they keep standard CD's, vertical standard dvd's.

for most of books/magazines I use billy shelves. But under heavy loads of books, it appears you may need to have stronger REAL wood shelves. Or metal.

Vinyl I keep in strong plastic "cubes" what can be used for building shelves of any size. Just buying more of cubes and putting them on top of eachother.

those 1collumn cd-racks drive me nuts, so for cd i use 3 of these :

one can take 1008 cd's (or 500 dvd's) .....shipping is $$. very shallow so has to be anchored into the wall. company makes nice stuff :http://cd-rek.nl/

Good thing about things build of smaller columns/cubics/parts is the possibility to adjust them to fit rooms in ideal way. I got probably close to 40 of those "cd pillars". But since rooms of old house are often weird shapes and different sizes, things like the ikea "LP shelve" is hardly option. Anything that can maximize use of room space is good - even if it gets slightly expensive.
If you get really nerdy or protective, for most of things, you can get doors. Cost more than shelves themselves, but if you happen to have pets/kids/.. sunlight? whatever, who need to keep their hands off, I'm sure transparent or solid doors is good choice too. I find no need to try save money to not buy 50 euro door for shelves which houses books of same value each.

I thought most of us record collectors stayed out of direct sunlight and can't have kids because we would murder them for field recordings.

I need to get my stuff out of boxes and bookshelves but I never have enough money and when I do I prefer to buy stuff to fill them. Focused mostly on Zines, art and books right now.

Hey Mikko, in the "Slave Stamina" video, is that your XXX collection? If it is, how many videos do you own (including everything from DVD, 8mm and VHS)?
