One of my favorites haven't seen mentioned is Ulster, an early Brazilian punk band that is raw and angry. I guess they were notorious for wearing black balaclavas and playing in the back of trucks looking like terrorists during a very real period of political/economic unrest and violence. I guess the got back together in the 2000's and its not nearly as raw as their 80's recordings but Ulsterror cd compilation and the M-19 e.p. are noise punk essentials

Cosigned.  The new stuff is more metallic, but if you can separate associations from old and new, the new is worth hearing and having.  There's also a track on ABC Hardcore 82 7".

TKO is reissuing all the early work from Poison Idea. May order the 2 LPs that are currently available; I think I sold or traded "Pick Your Kings" so wouldn't mind having it again. I was just informed that someone I've met did the remastering.

Cool!

The Poison Idea radio set is just top notch from this early era for musicianship and style.
Pick Your King will always have a special place in my heart.

I got my copy of "The Fatal Erection Years" LP a couple of weeks ago and it is presented really well...the music is great which goes without saying.

I've been listening to Crazy Spirits Demo LP loads - its great. Sounds like a noisey version of The Germs.

Been listening to Invasion and Inservibles LP's constantly since I got them earlier in the year...anyone know of any bands similar to them? I like the heavily delayed/reverbed vocals...that sort of stuff.

I've not heard of Inservibles.

"Have we talked about bands like Invasion, Destino Final, and Pioggia Nera? Great new millennial punk bands that have a twist of goth in them, while having traces of Finnish vocal echo, heavy crust bass and pacing, mesmerizing riffing, dark production, and notably pleasing visual art? The Destino Final - Atrapados 2009 album will likely make my "best of the decade" list. As I re-listen to all these, I'm unsure why I would place Destino Final on the list and not Invasion, for all the records strike me as unique, powerful, smartly constructed, and pleasing in every way.

I would think the old schoolers who find little new punk that is interesting would really get into all of this. There's a feel to these bands that hearkens back to the 80s, yet they are not mimics or even homage. Doing their own thing and blowing minds."

Inservibles do a similar thing to invasion/destino final but do it rawer and faster with crazy amounts of echo on the vocals. Much more straight punk influenced than crust.
Piogia Nera sound good - thanks.

Been in a big Polish HC/punk mood the past few days.  Post Regiment (1990 demo forward), Antidotum (1st LP is far better than their 2nd), El Banda (both LPs are great, but the 1st is the better), PiekÅ‚o Kobiet, Delicje (post-El Banda), Arrwstia (Greece), and I need to give La Fraction more of a chance.

The sample sounds great.  Apologies if this should be in the classifieds.  I'm not affiliated with anyone involved.  Just liked the sample quite a bit.

new label, Ultra Sonido. If you're a fan of raw South American punk/metal/hc, this release is a must! Previously only known to the most die hard of underground tape traders, Curriculum Mortis' debut 1988 demo, Sentencia de Muerte, is a raw and ferocious mix of hardcore and thrash metal that South American bands mastered in the late 1980s. Seven songs over the course of 30 minutes, for the first time ever on vinyl. Limited to 500 copies.

Write up from our main man Fred Alva (Wardance Records) -
Life in Peru during the mid-1980's was a cauldron of simmering tensions threatening to push society over the edge. A Maoist inspired insurgent group promised to level the country into a killing field, Khmer Rouge style. The state's security apparatus responded in kind, through a scorched earth policy, a catch-22 scenario of killing the patient to cure the disease. Teenagers growing up in the capital of Lima had few outlets to channel the overwhelming dread of those times.

The worldwide Trash Metal explosion coupled with the more extreme HC/Punk sounds provided a source of inspiration; a way to exorcise the doom & destruction via the creation of their own apocalyptic noise. This wasn't easy, in a country with limited resources: A lack of equipment, indifferent studio engineers, frequent power outages, antagonistic adults/peers & the all-too real possibility of
being "mistakenly" shot by the army or the police.

It is to Curriculum Mortis credit that in spite of all these obstacles, they succeeded in creating such a vital musical document. The title of the demo, Sentencia De Muerte, takes on a morbid literal meaning. End times were here; society would either be destroyed or irrevocably altered during the year of zero. The pummeling rhythm section, howling guitar riff & the agonizing vocals reflect dark days. Listen closely & you'll hear the executioner's song heralding the end of this life/death sentence.

saw the band Dead in the Dirt last night. Good crust punk with some real grind-y moments. It another band that tags itself as black metal when its just crust punk, but they put on a good show. Recommended.

Throw Bricks at Coppers - How Many More Brutal Fucking Police Murders demo 1998

Thick, smooth guitars ala Hiatus and Doom with the spirit and caveman brutality of Cracked Cop Skulls.  I'm still undecided if they're as good as any of these mentioned, but I like the feel a lot.

They borrow some riffs from old HC. "Bow Street Bastards" opens with the riff from "Karma" of DxRxIx. "Hospitalised by Telescopic Batons" borrows a riff as well, but I can't quite put my finger on it.  "Jesus is a Cunt" is Dayglo Abortions "Suicide".

Are you looking for newer power-violence, stuff from the 90s, or just anything that's good?

Any power violence recommendations?

The Water Torture 7" "Shellfire" is superb. I would also look into the Endless Blockade if you haven't, the last split they did with Unearthly Trance features Jon from Slogun and the EB dudes do an excellent Slogun cover too. Andy and Eric (main songwriters from EB) went on to form another solid PE act called Column of Heaven.

Bookburner had some awesome potential with their 7" but I believe the band is done.

Lastly, if you really enjoy Despise You, look into the S/T 7" from Final Draft. Furious power violence, with some great hip hop samples.

I was thinking of Bookburner and The Endless Blockade as well, but then I checked my notes and relistened to Bookburner.  I like what they were attempting to do, but I think the exercise was a failure overall.  Too much noise and not enough HC, and not enough good noise that got in the way of the average HC homage.  I've only heard that one 7", though.

SFN - Itching 2010 - good power-violence from Wisconsin - nice bass tone (MitB) - I hope someone releases a discography CD.

Running for Cover - Dark Well 2008 - smoking power-violence album with a [sometimes] annoying outro - holding down the roots to power-violence with fury and might, but progressively so.  You can't go wrong with anything they did.  Great band.

Society of Friends - Growing Up and Moving Away LP - this album made my top-10 of the decade (2000-2010) - they were solid to start, but they only got better and better - I'll be listening to this album in 30 years - a bona fide classic.

For my money, The Endless Blockade's benchmark was the Turning Illness into a Weapon album.  It feels like they structured it, as in its flow, like a quality noise album.  It's unique and very well done in that regard.

If you like Crossed Out, I recommend Su19b.  Really the only Crossed Out worship worth spit.

You already know about Apt.213, and while the first 7" is still their best, I recommend their discography CD and everything they've done after it.  I probably like them more now than I did when they formed.

Threatener is not power-violence, but for that all-out, balls to the wall energy of Despise You, they're in the same league.  Fierce HC thrash of the highest order.
