The charm of classic Scandinavian hardcore is hardly in the hateful/frustrated mood that can be found in some metal influenced, double bass drum driven stuff like New Lows. But rather in the honest, drunken, chaotic way of putting things out. They are hardly to be compared.

Its all "hardcore" though isn't it? Never got all the hype about it due to twangy, flimsy, weak guitars, spastic drumming, and not too many memorable parts if ever. Most songs bleed into each other and it doesn't grab my attention at all. Reminds me of HNW to be honest. Same same same same same same. Lastly, bitch ass vocals to boot, and a language that I don't understand, which doesn't allow me to get a fuller grasp at what the band is trying to do. Maybe if I knew what they were yelling about, I'd get into it. I doubt it though.

I guess you are pretty much for safe&sane stuff? ..weak guitars, spastic drumming etc. are for me Raw,crude, nasty and chaotic.
Like CONFUSION http://www.discogs.com/Confusion-Hopeless/master/217406   !!! or some of the best early Finnish HC.
Stuff you worship is in my books pretty close to BLINK 182 or something..  TONS of mosh parts..oh dear. Baseball caps worn backwards and silly shorts. You call that angry/frustrated/hateful.huh!

Used to be a big fan of punk and HC. Listen to less now but still return to "classics" from time to time. I'm very much out of the loop with new bands who don't make noise! For me personally there is definitely a connection between punk and noise/P.E./etc.

Framtid are another class Jap bunch.

Didn't really care for Harvest of the Carcass. Too moshy for me.

But you like Nails? And don't tell me "its because they have blast beats", there are TONS of mosh parts on that first release. Fuck, when they played Chicago it was all the tough guys.

Quote from: Markkula on March 23, 2012, 06:45:23 PM
NEW LOWS sounds just impotent for my ears. I think it is stange that someone finds that kind of stuff hateful!

Thats cool because Finnish/Swedish hardcore are beyond impotent for me, as in where were the balls in the first place?

Lyrically New Lows is ugly, ugly, ugly. However this may not translate well with someone who doesn't have a full grasp of the language, as I mentioned earlier.

You guys excelled better at noisecore then hardcore quite frankly.

Also, probably should've mentioned them earlier but:

CURSED (I, II, and parts of III fucking slay).
RINGWORM
INTEGRITY (early)

STANGE DAYS AHEAD.

Cursed is one of my favorite bands. Same with Integrity, even current Integrity, seeing as how the Blackest Curse is a return to their old sound. And no, with Nails it's not the blast beats (although I think those are good). I guess New Lows just didn't hit it for me. Not saying I hate mosh-y stuff, I definitely don't, but I didn't really feel anything when I listened to Harvest of the Carcass. And I guarantee if you saw New Lows in Chicago, you'd see tough guys too.

Trap Them straddle the line between grind/d-beat/hardcore. Great stuff.

Definitely agreed, although I didn't care for "Darker Handcraft" as much as their previous stuff.

I know honor_is_king brought up Integrity and Ringworm, but anyone into other Holy Terror stuff? I really dig Blind To Faith and Rot in Hell.

Am I the only one here who doesn't come from a punk or HC background? Or for that matter struggles to give much of a shit about those genres. I can say with absolute certainty that no fucking punk etc has had any influence on what I do as Shift.

Cheers Simon! I can possibly make an exception for Cro-Mags but not so much for the music as in the military manner in which they conducted themselves when I saw them in 91. Seeing them and their crew come charging single file out the door at 6am humping their gear on their backs and on to the sleeper with the man in front shouting out orders was impressive as hell. Poser group Laibach certainly didn't act like that off stage. After miming their set Laibach went back to being pot smoking liberals. Cro-Mags acted like the real fucking deal!

Merzbow's Noisembryo or Artificial Invagination is clearly music in comparison to Confusion's Hopeless.  I'm someone who finds the argument that "noise isn't music" to be silly, but I can almost get there with Confusion.  That band was primal, raw, caveman particles of nastiness.  One of the all-time great 7"s.  Fierceness and actual brutality captured on record.  Can't let a Confusion mention go without adding to its admiration.

This is a funny thread.  Give me a minute.  I want to grab a sarsaparilla, lawn chair, and straw hat.

eh, i listen to a few punk bands (flipper style mostly) but to be honest I just don't get the obsession with a genre that is 98% crap. same goes for metal and jazz. maybe its the fans that do it. never liked punks never liked metal heads

Quote from: bitewerksMTB on March 24, 2012, 04:23:22 AMShift, what did you listen to during your early teen years?

Early teens were synthpop and EBM mostly with the odd industrial addition of SPK, Neubauten and Cabaret Voltaire. I think my move into the synth thing started with my older brother taking me along to see Indochine when I was 12. It was probably the first time I'd seen people dressed in black and wearing make up etc. On one level it was terrifying but on the other it was the coolest and most extreme shit I'd experienced and I wanted to be part of it. This would have been 1985. At 13 I was in, at 16 I was out. Looks/image wise at least. I became a skinhead because I liked to fight. Never really got on with the music and remained a DM etc fan.

It's hard to say what exactly is the "background" for me, since pretty much everything happened at the same time. To find harder metal, punk and noise all happened in matter of months. In small towns of such era, was no "scene" for specific style really. You got to know bands by tapes from friends or international trades. Some records at gigs etc.

Even if I never was really BIG punk collector, I did my share of punk fanzines in 90's and organized some gigs, and played in some bands (most notable perhaps HARSH (fin)) etc. I do have several hundreds of punk records. I like several styles, where few examples are mentioned. Each category one could of course list several more examples:

UK Anarcho punk, I do have Crass and all those, yet my favorite always was:

APOSTLES. Hard to find online samples (or even records!) what would fully represent them.

EXTREME NOISE TERROR - split with Chaos UK is probably my favorite.

Grindcore

NAPALM DEATH - of course!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkzibXbPwnk

BLOOD - actually I got this same time as "From enslavement to obliteration" and sheer obscurity of it made me lifetime worshipper! Belongs to my most ever listened albums together with "ABlaze in the northern sky" and "Extreme Aggression".

One could list probably hundred great 7"s, but since I noticed someone uploaded Dogmatized 7" (named after Blood track? Don't know), lets link that. Good example of crude and nasty 80's & 90's grind 7"s were, and how pure gold they are compared to just about anything coming now.

BRIGADA DO ODIO - Olho Seco split LP is one of the releases what surely bends the line of music/noise, already so early in punk.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcGVIVcEQiE

CONFUSION - cult beyond words!!

Finnish hc/punk

TUOMIOPÄIVÄN LAPSET - their best session, but not best track from it. Best would have been Mustat Liput!

Kakkahätä 77 - I think it's little shame the name of band is for many such turn off, but actually I find music and lyrics to have much more point than vast majority of punk happening anymore. 2nd LP has been rotated more than any contemporary punk in my household.

Antiseen - absolute kings as well. Not so long ago managed to score nearly 20 7"s of Antiseen from local collector for bargain price. I though I had pretty extensive Antiseen collection, but band has so huge discography it's pointless to hunt all.

Mistreat - Finnish legend since '88. Especially first couple albums kill.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xzj9MtfWHMs&skipcontrinter=1

Freikorps - my absolute favorite of German melodic oi/punk type nazi rock. Sloppy, untight, and all, but merciless understanding of catchy melody!

If anyone could tell what lyrics are in english of this, I'd appreciate very much:

Spend the whole 90´s involved in the Swedish hardcore scene, and i am not alone i recognize .Can´t say that very much have influenced my music but bands like Gasp, Man is the bastard, early Black Dice, early Locust etc opened up for a whole new music universe for me.
I still listened to allot of stuff like Infest, Viod, Heroin, Born Against, Minor Threat, gasp, i Spy, His hero is gone, Antioch Arrow etc.

This Void track is possible the best track in the world: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ozr4MJ7C1Yw&feature=related

Listened the track and from "related" list noticed Die Kreuzen. If someone didn't know, it was members of Boy Dirt Car / Impact Test.

I find really hard to understand the hype around this band. Like the track linked, sounds just too sloppy and lazy all around. Kollaa Kestää, another classic Finnish punk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3YWEDrk7aQ) is among my favorites and it is definitely as sloppy and as lazy, so I don't know what is wrong with KH. Perhaps the distinctive playing and singing of mr. Bergman - no offence to the man himself, though.

I had the first demo tape of Kakkahätä, then they still sounded somewhat raw and rock'n roll.

Yet there seems to be another band sounding very much the same, hoh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecs6UQu_RWc&feature=related

edit: somehow almost all 77-punk done after the 70s sound either too street/skate-punk or way too sloppy. Where is the rocking stuff such as Ratsia or Pelle Miljoona 1980.

Have you looked over at killyourpetpuppy.co.uk ? Loads of obscure Apostles material uploaded there (demos, rehearsals, gigs, private tapes, etc). Also plenty of stuff by the rest of the usual anarcho suspects, Crass, Flux, The Mob, Amebix, the list goes on and on.
