Does KILLING JOKE qualify as punk?

I'll rephrase that question, would any of you more punk savvy people here qualify KJ within the wider punk bracket?

Well, I'd say that the first KJ album is a lot of things, and punk is undoubtedly one of them.
But to consider Killing Joke a punk band, at least musically, is not doing them any justice.

That would be my assessment as well. I fucking love KJ. They have had a huge impact on me. Especially the Extremities album but I love almost everything from them. Even the really slick mid 80's albums.

And Killing Joke are still very enjoyable to see live!

I'm really into classic sxe hardcore. JUDGE would be one of my favorites.

Hardcore is a big part of my counterculture roots--spent most of the '90s immersed in that scene. I remember generally feeling like an outsider also liking stuff like Cabaret Voltaire & TG at that time, though--not many people I knew in the hardcore/punk scene shared my enthusiasm... I don't keep great track of what's going on in hardcore/punk at this stage. I still have a number of records I consider classics, but not a great deal of enthusiasm for checking out new acts, etc.--too many other things demanding my attention. In fact, I just put a lot of my old hardcore records up for sale so as to make more room for industrial and experimental stuff....

In terms of punk in general, I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned THE CRUCIFUCKS on this thread yet. The first album is so obnoxious, so great!

GNR

I have often watched GNR videos before Hobs and S&Q shows to pick up classic stagecraft tips. Ridiculous band but Axl Rose is some kind of twisted and deeply confused genius.

Drunks with Guns (there was a rumour one of the members was a kiddy diddler)

If the guy could control himself around the later singer "Melissa" then there's something seriously fucking wrong with him.

I know it's not punk or HC but I think their Appetite for Destruction album is simply perfect. It was my first ever musical purchase, on cassette in 1992 or '93. I bought it again on CD a few years ago and I can say nostalgia has nothing do with the fact that I still love it.

FreakAnimalFinland

I belong to such generation where GNR was simply the biggest band out there and I got really into it before finding underground music. As remains of teen boy impact, I do have more GNR cd's and records than any other band/artist. I guess couple hundred. Like usual, many of the rough demo tracks offer more than finished albums. Although no bad things to say about Appetite or Lies.

Am I the only one here who doesn't come from a punk or HC background? Or for that matter struggles to give much of a shit about those genres. I can say with absolute certainty that no fucking punk etc has had any influence on what I do as Shift.

I got into industrial, hardcore and metal all at roughly the same time. My background is actually progressive rock, krautrock and post rock stuff in terms of listening as well as playing in formal jazz / funk / swing bands throughout school.  Maybe someday I'll upload you guys my old jam band's demos.

Powerviolence is pretty crucial to my hardcore listening.  I'm not too into youth crew / NYxHC stuff with the exception of some of the bigger names... Never really got into the scandinavian or japanese hXc stuff, but I haven't looked too hard also.

Some 90s metalcore is good (Earth Crisis, Integrity, Racetraitor, Abnegation, etc) but I feel like the powerviolence / thrashcore stuff is a bit more appealing to me.

The last two big "trends" of hardcore (raw "mysterious guy hardcore" and this current blackened neo-crust thing) have both been more appealing.  I've been enjoying a lot of stuff in the latter of those two recently, especially Trap Them, Masakari, Enabler, Vestiges, Downfall Of Gaia, Alpinist, etc...

I come from a Very Metal background, have been listening only to Heavy, Black, Death, Thrash Metal for years before I got into some Ambient and from there into Industrial and Noise.
As for Punk and Hardcore: never really interested me, but since the last couple of years I've been listening to some stuff like Doom, Extreme Noise Terror, Raw Noise, Wolfpack/Wolfbrigade... As for Hardcore, I only got 2 CDs from Agnostic Front (which I got in a kind of lottery from a media store and with which I won about 200 CDs), and I quite like it, though don't listen to it too much.

it's arguable that i listen to punk/hc/oi more than anything else.. with the exception of metal.

can't live without:  GG ALLIN (in any incarnation), THE RAMONES, DIE KREUZEN, FLIPPER (i'll call em punk, i guess), COCK SPARRER, HARD SKIN, THE BUSINESS, BLITZ, THE MISFITS (danzig era mostly, though some of the michael graves stuff is ok), BLACK FLAG, etc. etc. etc. ....

OUT NOW
White Load - Wayne's World 3 b/w Godfather 4 LP
Load Records

"Rock music with no excuses. After a clutch of 7"'s the band moves on to the big 12" format. Sounding like a friggin' locomotive of stale beer with paint chips under the nails coming straight for your E-Z chair. You are knocked clear across the room with some ringing in your ears. In year head rebounds a pelvic grunt with flavors of dirty rock superheros like: Dwarves, Oblivians, and your blood pumps hard.

White Load is a Providence, RI three piece (guitar/drums/vocals) thats been around the block since 2007. In that time they have drank some of your beer, thrown some mikes and cymbals and likely talked shit about your band. Its probably best this record just barely breaks 20 minutes, because if it did it would be like them playing two shows. Seek this out if you feel high-test roid-burned rock is still important to you, otherwise proceed with your plan and listened to the latest beardo rockers give you a strum job."

PREVIEW TRACK, "LESS LIFE" http://soundcloud.com/load-records/white-load-less-life

order from http://www.armageddonshop.com or any distro stupid enough to stock the record

side note: the A side is normal "studio recordings," while the B side is the A side re-recorded live in my attic while we were bordering on blackout drunkenness.

Fuck, what a bunch of classics! :)
Oh well, since this thread made me a bit nostalgic, here are some other personal faves, this time from my own homeland:

INDIGESTI - silenzio statico
Maybe their best track? Surely the most famous. This is what italian HC was all about. Fighting the dullness of northern Italy's urban/suburban areas with an urgency that's been very seldom recaptured by other bands. Hardcore.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5KZCGyLPAI

RAW POWER - state oppression
Another full fledged classic of italoHC. Same as above. And since we were talking about GN'R, not many people know that in the very early stages of their career the Guns even opened a Raw Power gig! But in those days GN'R had the ferocity and stage antics of a punk band, so that's not surprising after all?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hfU9cE3Tho

NEGAZIONE - dritto contro un muro
I'd be curious to know what Italian HC record foreigners consider to be the best one. Many italians (like me) think that the first Negazione LP is still unsurpassed.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj1JuyExvK0

RAPPRESAGLIA - attack
Fast pace, political lyrics, frustrated voice, another italian HC classic. Just listen to the bass at the beginning... wonderful.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlo7pfyvTGk

BED BOYS - se un giorno accadesse
Political HC/punk band from Turin, one of the lesser known in the italoHC milieu, but a real forgotten gem. The first song from their 7" EP 'L'indifferenza uccide' is one of the best HC songs ever in my opinion. I didn't find the single track on youtube but you can hear the whole EP here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86WmGLA9CZA

CRASH BOX - nato per essere veloce
One of the best anthems of italian hardcore, the title translates into 'born to be fast' and has become a sort of catchphrase for people who like this kind of music.
This version is a re-recording made for their first LP, 'finale', it features a guitar that's a bit more metal than usual, but IMO it's the best sounding version there is.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95Npi1Ij8L0

KINA - questi anni
The italian equivalent of Husker Du. This is their best track ever... unfortunately it won't say much to those of you who don't understand Italian, but the lyrics are among the very best (if not THE very best) that you can find in this genre in this country. Still gives me shivers every time I hear it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWNsDvcfpwI

SOTTOPRESSIONE - distruggersi per poi risorgere
The best italian HC band of the 90's. Period. They did two albums, a 7", a bunch of tracks here and there, and not a single bad thing. Amazing.

Great fucking track! Old Integrity rules, newer stuff is purely bullshit. "For Those Who Fear Tomorrow" is one of the only good "metalcore" albums I've heard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyrrpEUQhlc

Great album but I've always preferred "Humanity is the Devil."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdHJrg1W7Q0

And have you heard their newest stuff? The Blackest Curse is a great album. Sounds just like old Integrity. Same with their recent E.P.s.
