NO JOO JOO!

Tyhjä Pää started off the fest with a scorching cut-up noise set. Volume was really loud, the beefy soundsystem was one of the highlights of this whole fest, everyone got to blast their hearts and minds out. This was one of the key elements that made this festival so good. The sound system is a monster! Tyhjä Pää had relatively extensive amount of gear, most interesting being a metal bucket with junk on the floor that was played with a drum kick pedal!

Neandertaal was a new name to me, played a set of solid set of echoye shaker box accompanied noise.

Bryskt had plenty of strange gear, almost like a morse code device that he kept tapping intensively. Like a space age Titanic cruising towards edge of the world. Some people mentioned seeing a tiny hurdy gurdy as well?

Raato was more on the relaxing side, at least for me. Droning synth tones, scraping pedal sounds and some sort of vocals.

Then started to the full throttle quad of the evening, Vincent Dallas is familiar through several tapes of his, and first time he is playing in Finland. Physical and intense noise, very animated set, which I liked. At times he seemed like being electrocuted by the noise, while screaming into a bucket full of rattling scrap metal and contant mics. VD set was executed with chaotic precision, perfect loudness and cruchiness to the sound. Charming gentleman as well!

Fricsvell was shrouded in the darkness, summoning industrial chaos with ear slitting feedback, junks echoing in the darkness and mysterious growly vocals emerging. It was easy to submerge into the sound while standing in the darkness and let it consume all senses. Ripping ears apart, physical feel of sound preassure. Very very good! Need to get their material asap.

Ahola & Silander played the same set I saw last summer, but this time with less blood and more aggressiveness. Stage was littered with various metal objects, some making more sound, some making less. But physical part was intense, other part of the duo doing a full week workout, by the end being exhausted and lying on the floor. Music was it was mostly acoustic, slightly amplified metal bashing, then morped into synth/pedal psychedelia.

After sweaty workout it was time to get in a totally another kind of sweaty workout mood, Moozzhead closed out the first evening. Massive, wall size background video of tastefully curated 80's and 90's pornoclips. Emphasis on the tit section, which should no come as a surprise to anyone. Find it hilarious that some people in the year 2022 can still get upset over gloryfying the ultimate female beauty, haha! Wish I had time to get upset over such things. Anyway, irrelevant blabber aside, the set was pedal noise to the perfection. No hesitation moments, no fiddling around aimlessly. Just pure harsh noise bliss. Big tits, harsh noise, what more can a man ask from life?? Saw Moozzhead live few months back, but the lack of proper PA made the set quite of an anticlimax, but this wiped all that away from my memory. A serious good mood noise!

Saturday started off on an easy foot with two more relaxed artists. Laszlo Jamf X Kadonnut Manner played in the smaller space. Background video shot from a train, nice wintery scenery. At this point of the day I was extremely tired. So I found myself a nice spot to sit, the room was really warm, artist was playing loudly this ooomphy bass sound and I closed my eyes. Felt like I was going back to womb, and took a quick power nap! Empowering set, to say the least! There was also some guitar work, heavily effected acoustic guitar that sounded really nice.

Jussi Alaraasakka, sounded almost like not so pissed off Brighter Death Now, without vocals, at times. But in the middle of the set some weird disco beats emerged and the set kind died off and started to lose interest. But it reverted back to BDNish punishment, so the set ended up on a good note.

Hazardikarhuko was some sort of performance art, at least there was the danger of participation, so I vanished to discuss with a friend. Intense background videos of mass graves are fine, but bring me maracas to play? I'm out! People later said the set was one big confusion.

Zherbin had gear which reacted to light, so he had one attached to his head in otherwise dark space. Later on he dressed himself with Ikea bags and had a wild freak out, while playing the set with his headlight. Interesting approach, moderately okay results!

Amek-Maj with his Behexen hoodie and Adidas sweatpants took his crowd with intense performance that end up dislocating his already bad shoulder. Still pushed the set through with agonizing facial expressions. Could have been much longer set but for understandable reasons it was cut short. See video for excellent ripping sound and fuck the world performing!

Well then. The grand secret, state level mystery, big amounts of hype. The New Boyfriends. I've never seen people being so interested in setting up the set. Loud roof metal sheets was brought to the stage. A whole sink was set to hang from the ceiling. Half of an oil barrel. More farm tools, shovels, pitchfork. A wheelbarrow, and finally a cement mixer. People were anxious for the set to start. And boy what a set it was. The build up of slow screeches evolving into a full noise hysteria among the crowd. Cement mixer rolling, bottles being tossed in, tons of tapes tossed in, mixed together and poured to the wheelbarrow. Pure noise worship, I was literally out of words after the gig for a long while. Just standing around and reflecting what I just saw. Goddamn, easily in the top 3 of noise gigs I have ever seen. Maybe even the number 1.

After such a monumental gig, I was really in other worlds. So next to artists really suffered from this for me. I just couldn't pay much attention to them. Circle of Shit did an okay set with mostly samples, vocals and oppressive tones of noise. Death Basket did nothing to me really, noisecore/grind or so. Not the best.

What an unfortunate situation to play on the same night after the The New Boyfriends. Unless you are Umpio! Small stage room, crowd gathered around Umpios table, very intimate atmosphere. It's been awhile since I've seen him in action, and he is the master of his craft. Build up was just perfect, milking that money shot and then unleashing blasts of crude, crunchy Umpio sound we all love. Birds chirping and fading out with ripples of noise. But the crowd was hungry for more! Umpio played a furious encore that was as long as the planned set. Umpio gig's that I've seen have been kind of conservative with that blasting madness he does so well, so this encore was all about that, constant money shot, candy raining from the skies! Absolutely killer performance, best Umpio gig I've seen. Crowd was enthusiastic and really in the mood for wild noise, and they got their wishes. What a way to close this whole event. Unfortunately no video of the wild encore, I was too busy enjoying noise.

late as always:
thanks for the roses, but most of all, thanx for the xlent fest!! good venue, magnificent sound system, good food, distro table, byob...

a well curated selection of very different types of noise, "noise", and NOIZU!!!!!! my only critique is that next time performers who make complete destruction on stage should be headliners... like the case of ahola & silander, and new boyfriends. seems stupid that after such big, visual, cathartic and physical junk demolition sets one must return to "creep hunched over table" performances

still so: next time very well worth traveling to, even from afar! would be nice to see wcn or totalblack (or friends from sweden?!!) setting up a monster distro... could become a legendary happening celebrating all the many aspects of noizu apart from armpit ventilation crowd
