Title: Podcast?
Post by: RG on June 29, 2010, 03:27:40 AM
To those involved with the production of the 'zine: have you considered doing a companion podcast to accompany each issue? Similar idea to other zines doing an issue + CD (or tape or whatever), but instead using the new media of podcasting. It's always good to hear examples from the work of the artists being interviewed, plus you could also include audio interviews if the opportunity ever arises. I think podcasting makes this more of a reality now than in the past, because obviously it would be much cheaper than doing a run of tapes/CDs.

Who knows, maybe I'm alone. This kind of music, like other genres of underground music, is very dedicated to physical media and maybe what I'm suggesting wouldn't be accepted. I do think there would be an audience for it though. There are a few existing industrial/noise/p.e. podcasts out there (The Plague Cast comes to mind, great job btw), but they're very sporadic and perhaps a regular SI podcast would fill a void.

I like the idea, but there are a few practical problems. Interviews are done by various people around the world, and not everyone has access to releases from each project interviewed. Same goes for reviews. For this to work, you would need one particular person to do it regularly, each release; they'd have to have at least one piece from each interview subject. This is not impossible, but it does require a bit of organising.
Maybe a semi-regular podcast, not necessarily associated with each release of the zine (which is only three times a year), involving sounds that SI would normally cover, would be another option.

I don't think it could work any other way. A group of people from around the globe working on it would probably be a clusterfuck.

And I'm sure the artists involved would be happy to provide a track or two to give an example of their work. Reading an interview with a band/artist only goes so far if you're unfamiliar with them. To have a sample of their work brings things full circle and can give a full perspective on the written interviews.

Not sure what podcast requires. All I know friend of mine who does occasional radioshows, uploads mp3 of his radioshow to be heard. But I guess this is not the same? I'm clueless about internet music.

Getting a podcast together, itself, is easy enough. If you've got an audio application (like Audacity), and a host site or blog, you can do it. Club Moral has been doing it for years (http://clubmoralstocklist.podomatic.com/ (http://clubmoralstocklist.podomatic.com/)), for example. I've done them before, there'd be a few people on this forum who would have. I'm happy to get one together for SI if others involved can simply forward me mp3 versions of tracks from projects they interview/review. I'm just wondering, though, if the interest is there? Not just from people involved with SI, but others wanting to listen to it.

perhaps just the interviewed artists is enough. If it isn't much of an work, and artists feel its ok, I guess would be doable. I think showing samples of reviewed items is unnecessary.

Ya, samples of the reviewed releases isn't what I had in mind. Just tracks from the interviewed artists and maybe audio interviews or live shows.

As far as distribution, you wouldn't necessarily have to go through iTunes. A blogspot page or something with dl links could work, but of course then you'd have to do extra work to get the word out and direct traffic to the website. iTunes would give you MUCH more exposure and perhaps tap into new audiences, whereas a blog page would kind of keep it an insular "scene" thing.

Also, with iTunes I think money might come into play. On a few podcasts, I've heard people talk about paying for bandwidth, but then again those podcasts have many thousands of listeners so maybe that wouldn't even be a factor here.

A P.E./Noise/Industrial Podcast would be great. There is a couple already but they suck, seems like they are/were ran by artsy college kids.

+1

interviews + sounds + reports + whatnot!! i'm also kinda internet retarded  (podcast? rss feed?) but i could try helping with compiling the stuff from various sources if folks can transfer them to hard disk and then use sendspace / senduit / upload it somewhere then send me the link... somebody else could handle the hosting / uploading of the finished thing??

worth a try!?!

If you're going to compile it, you may as well upload it. It's the easiest part of the exercise.

Sounds like a great idea, I am for it to get exposure to some newer/obscure bands.

I am an avid listener of podcasts and love to download and listen to them on my 45 min long walk to work. i think interviews with artists/label owners more important but tracks intermixed wouldnot go astray, shows could feature new material or focus on essential listening according to who is being interviewed, i do know that bandwidth can get pricey from multiple downloads depending on audio sampling rate of podcast.

I upload a new podcast weekly and it is very easy for me to do this and have it available as regular MP3 download, streaming, or Apple. If any of you would like and have recorded interviews available, I would be more then happy to make a section within A Radio With Guts dedicated to SI interviews, music etc.
