Title: Freak (Psyche) Volk
Post by: ImpulsyStetoskopu on April 04, 2012, 05:58:33 PM
Inspired by Mattias' post in PLAYLIST, I thought that I am not only who loves this kind of music and I decided open a new topic. I am especialy interested in not well known groups from the end 1960 / begining 1970, but not only from this period. I like these one from the last years too. I hope that here are men who are able to share names of worth groups to know and their impressions.

Some of my favourites:

HANDGJORT (Sweden)

STENBLOMMA (Sweden)

I'm not an expert but have been listening for years to mp3s of Stenblomma's Alla Träd har Samma Rot. Such an amazing album! If some Swede can help me track down a reasonably priced vinyl copy of this I'd be eternally grateful!

Not that freak(y) or obscure but still very good. I saw her perform a couple of years ago and it was just overwhelming... amazing, honest music by a genuinely charming woman:

Vashti Bunyan (England)

I'm sure mr. Haare has some nice suggestions?

Fact, not so much freaky, but I like it. Sometimes it reminds ma a liitle bit Melissa NADLER. I am attracted to "village" moods and so melancholic, woman voices. I will buy it soon.

Not sure how hard this is to find. I've been looking for it for a while but still haven't come across a copy, but then i'm not out recordhunting that much these days and haven't really "tried".

Will post some favorites later.

The Pilz label of the krautrock era is a great way to start with this type of music.  Use this online version as a reference:
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ultimathule/krautrockers.html

Holderlins Traum is a beautifully recorded album.  Top production albums list for me.  Very warm and analog smooth.  Extraordinary feeling Dierks captured on that record.

Witthuser+Westrupp - Trips + Traume

Broselmaschine's first (self-titled) album is another standout.  Love the guitar playing and sound on this one.

Maybe Folque and Steeleye Span would be of interest to you as well?  Newer would maybe be something like Garmarna from Sweden.  Their first albums and EPs are top shelf.

Yeah, I have a printed book even.

Witthuser+Westrupp - Trips + Traume

I didn't know it earlier. Nice music but vocals are irritating.

Yeah, great music! They sang:

"Look up to the sky, heads are flying by.
In the land with no heads
fools hang them to trees.
Where love is like a muddy river run by frozen heat;
but the green fields go in and out under the sun."

Maybe Folque and Steeleye Span would be of interest to you as well?  Newer would maybe be something like Garmarna from Sweden.  Their first albums and EPs are top shelf.

Not so much but I didn't know it earlier. Maybe it must take more time...

I hear that all the time with Emtidi - Saat.

Try the s/t (1974) Folque album.  It's their best.

Have you heard Arrowwood, Novemthree, or Pantaleimon?  Pantaleimon's Trees Hold Time is beautiful and subtly psychedelic.

Great to see this thread - I love Comus (their first album, that is; the second is horrid), so I'll check out the rest of the Youtube links. Vashti Bunyan's Just Another Diamond Day is good, but the songs are a bit samey, I think. Or maybe I should listen to it more? Haven't heard Lookaftering yet.

this thread is simultaneously great and frustrating. i had no idea about most of these bands but ive been listening to them all lately and now want to explore a lot more of this stuff, but im a bit afraid of going down another rabbit hole. glad to find some new music though.

planning to check out a hoederlin album that a friend recently sent me this evening. are there any well known compilations that collect this stuff?

I like Changes quite a bit, but I think they're a bit off course from this thread.  Psychedelic folk isn't the same as neo-folk.

Very good. More progressive music (my first love music in my childhood) but really very good I must buy this album.

Too much Joan Baez. I prefere more crazy items.

Knutna Nävar (classic Gothenburg project, far out to the left)

Great! The next diamond to research out.

Very, very good. This is something what I like very much in this kind of music. I must get it.

Röda Ropet

Not so much.

Solanaceae is about as beautiful as I've heard anyone play. Up there with Pantaleimon when she's on. A couple tracks off the self-titled are thick with psychedelia; reminiscent of Holderlin and other krautrock cosmic folksters.

I really like the Swedish label Bauta Records and seeing Ur Kaos live was among the best I have ever seen. Swedish proggers putting Swans to shame back in the mid-eighties. Devastating.

Heads up, Swedish label Subliminal Sounds just reissued Joakim Skogsbergs 'Jola Rota' on vinyl. So nice to finally be able to erase those mp3s. Vinyl sounds great and comes with liner notes etc. 500 copies.
